Kathlyn Hartman "Kathy" Magram obituary

Kathlyn Magram Obituary

Kathlyn Hartman Magram died at home on Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, after a courageous and stoic battle with cancer.
Kathlyn was known as Kathy and after her grandchildren were born she became "Ma" to everyone in the family.
She was born on March 6, 1930, the daughter of the late Ann and Emil Hartman and sister of the late Edwin Hartman and sister-in-law of the late Helen Hartman. She grew up in Larchmont, N.Y., and graduated cum laude from Vassar College. She later went on to train as a fashion design artist at Fashion Academy in New York City, the school founded by her parents. She lived in Middletown for many years before moving to Glastonbury.
Kathy leaves four daughters and their husbands; Molly and Jeffrey Schpero of Orange; Amy Magram and Scott Dorris of Glastonbury; Linda Magram and Michael Watson and Tracy Magram and Paul Romano of Arlington, Mass. She also leaves eight beloved grandchildren, Gil and Jake Schpero; Alana, Cara, and Liam Dorris; Callum and Neila Watson; and Bridget Crespo. Kathy also leaves her adoring companion of 33 years, William Crosson of Coventry. In addition, her devoted brother, Jerard K. Hartman and his wife Dorothy, and many loving nieces and nephews and their families will miss Kathy. Kathy leaves cherished friends in Middletown and college friends throughout the country.
Family and friends have depended on Kathy's natural warmth, ability to listen, and wisdom in providing just the right advice for any problem. She had unerring good sense that didn't fail to benefit those around her. She was quietly brave in her fight with cancer, and the doctors and nurses who treated her commented on "her inner strength and outer poise."
Kathy has lived her life with intelligence, sensitivity, wit, beauty, and elegance. She continues to inspire us and help us as we try to channel her kindness, generosity, and grace. One thing we know we can never keep up with is her voracious reading habit, from travel memoirs and mysteries to works of great literature, all of which kept her spirit and mind well nourished. She shared a life-long interest in style and fashion with her granddaughters. Whether it was a trip to the grocery store, watching her favorite television show, "Seinfeld," or a long wait in a doctor's office, spending time with Kathy was special and fun.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Kathy's memory may be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor, Brookline, MA 02445 or online at www.danafarber.org. A memorial ceremony celebrating Kathy's life will be held at a later date.

Having Kathy as my Uncle Bills girlfriend for such a long time she was more like an Aunt to Me. She was such a beautiful, positive person. I loved her style, even when she was camping with my Uncle. I respected her greatly and was pleased she was able to attend both my daughters weddings among other family events. I can't imagine how difficult this is for her family. She will be greatly missed.

What a special lady she was! Her obituary is beautiful. I did not realize how amazingly talented she was, although I'm not surprised. I feel so privileged to have met her. My prayers go out to all the family. I know her passing has left a huge hole in your hearts!

I miss Ma so much everyday! She was such a big part of my life and who I am today! Above my full princess furniture and white bed, hangs one of her many vintage fashion sketches which I even shared with my fashion club at school and display at the Student Union. When I was down, she would accompany me to the mall, helping me pick out brand new outfits to cheer me up. I remember trips to Meriden Mall to pick out cute corduroy skirts and fall outfits for school. I loved lying in the bed with her early on saturday mornings and watching television together. I will miss seeing the 'Styles' section of the NY Times cut out on my desk waiting for me, being pen pals while at school, and just having her in my life. I cannot express how much I miss her! I couldn't have asked for a better grandmother!
