LOIS COPELAND Obituary

1950-2017 Lois C. Copeland of Kennebunk, Maine, and formerly of Portland, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on the morning of June 6, 2017 in York, Maine. Lois was surrounded by her loving husband and sons. The daughter of Lois and Irving Chappell, she was born in Maine, moving in her youth with the family to Connecticut, and eventually settling in Portland. She graduated from Portland High School and attended Southern Connecticut State College, leaving school to raise her family. Lois worked with the children of Portland for nearly 25 years as a substitute teacher and paraprofessional at Valley View School. She often talked about how gratified she was to have been part of so many children's progress. Lois is survived by her husband Chauncey; son Scott and daughter-in-law Kristin of Trumbull; son Grant and daughter-in-law Meghan of Guilford; grandchildren Emma, Aidan, Ella and Adam; brother Wayne Chappell and sister-in-law Barbara of Durham; and brother Scott Chappell and sister-in-law Deborah of Meriden. A sharp, passionate and creative person, Lois was very generous with her time and talents – contributing to numerous family endeavors, school programs and community organizations. While she enjoyed music, gardening, writing, floral arranging and beach walking, her family was always her key focus. Lois was so proud of her children and her grandchildren, and cherished time spent with them. A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday, June 24th at 2:00 pm at the First Congregational Church, 554 Main Street, Portland. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

To Lois's family: We have many happy memories of the Chappell family, Group camping in RI, clamming, singing around the campfire with Mr. Chappell on the guitar. We only knew Lois when we were all little, but we do remember she always had grace and sweetness, like her Mother. We are sure she grew up to be a wonderful wife, Mother, and Grandmother. Our Love and sympathy to you as you celebrate her life. The Hummels of Portland

Dear Chauncey and family;

So sorry for your loss.
I was truly saddened to hear of Lois's passing.
I too worked with Lois at Valley View school, we were both paraprofessionals working together to help mold the children's minds. What fun we had!
May you find comfort and healing in family and friends and know that Lois was loved and will be greatly missed!

Dear Chan and family,

My deepest condolences on the loss of your beloved Lois. She was caring, thoughtful, and so artistic and I loved working with her at Valley View. Her wit and gift with words always made me laugh. Rest in peace dear Lois.

I'm just sitting here thinking about Lois. I picture her pushing her red shopping cart down the halls at Valley View! She had a smile on her face and her cart was full of all sorts of crafts to create a fabulous bulletin board. (You always knew which boards Lois added her touch to!). She was a pleasure to call a colleague and friend. I'm happy that she made it to Maine, I'm sad she didn't get to spend her golden years there. So sorry Chan.
Sincerely , Laurie DiMauro

Dear Chan,
David and I would like to extend our condolences to you and your family on Lois's passing. I first met Lois when we both lived in Schwartz Hall at Southern. Then we worked together at Valley View for many years. Her impact with the little ones who were involved with the WORDS program will be of benefit to them for many years to come. I am sure there are many, many memorable experiences you can share as a family upon which you can always reflect with much happiness. During this difficult time rely on your family, faith, and friends for support.
