Ralph Matteo Obituary

Ralph A. Matteo
Ralph A. Matteo passed away peacefully on July 29, 2025 at the age of 83. Born and raised in Middletown, Connecticut, he was the son of State Senator Michael Matteo and Angeline (Cello) Matteo, whose example of public service helped shape his lifelong commitment to helping others. Ralph met his wife, Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Curt, while they were both students at Bridgeport University. Betty and Ralph were married for 61 years. In college, he was a member of the National Social Science Honor Society and Pi Gamma Nu. He later earned a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Connecticut, launching a distinguished career with the State of Connecticut. He held leadership roles at Connecticut Valley Hospital and Cedarcrest Hospital, where he served as a respected hospital administrator and expert in psychiatric social work. He also contributed his wisdom, insights, and heart to numerous boards, including Whiting Forensic and Gilead House. He served a leadership role on the board of directors of New England Residential Services, where his special needs daughter Allyson was a beloved resident. A lifelong music lover, Ralph played the trumpet and led the band Evergreen, performing at community events and senior dances. After retiring, he rediscovered his passion and founded Cadenza – A Brass Quintet, bringing music to audiences across Connecticut. As he once told the Hartford Courant in 1998, "I didn't realize just how much time I'd spend playing music, and I'm enjoying every moment." As a founding member of the Middletown Symphonic Band, Ralph helped shape a musical institution that brought joy and connection to generations of listeners. What began as a small community ensemble grew into a beloved regional fixture under the dedication of musicians like Ralph, who believed deeply in the power of music to unite, inspire, and uplift. His decades of playing with the band reflected not just a love of performance, but a commitment to community spirit, civic pride, and the simple beauty of people gathering to share music. In addition to his wife Betty, he is survived by his sisters, children, grandchildren and many cousins. Ralph was a loving brother to Allie Niemiec and Michele Stanley and husband Paul. Ralph was a devoted and proud father to Melissa Matteo O'Hara and husband, John O'Hara, and Michael Matteo and wife Cassandra (Creto) Matteo. He was predeceased by his daughter, Allyson Mary Matteo, who passed away in 2022 and held a cherished place in his heart every day. He found endless joy in his grandchildren-Erica Matteo, and Michael Matteo, Jack O'Hara and wife Alyssa O'Hara, and Suzanne O'Hara, He never missed a chance to cheer them on or celebrate their accomplishments. More than anything, Ralph wanted it to be known how deeply proud he was of his family-their achievements, their compassion, and the lives they are building. His love for them was steady, strong, and filled with admiration. Ralph's legacy lives on in the music he loved, the work he devoted himself to, and the family he held so dear. His Funeral Liturgy will be held on Monday (Aug. 4th) at 1 p.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Elm St., Middletown. Burial will be in St. Sebastian Cemetery, Rockfall. I met Ralph through the Middletown Symphonic Band when I joined in the early 90’s. I played with him in Jim Salonia’s big band, marching bands, John Oblon’s big band and others and loved the big, full sound he got out of his trumpet. He also invited me to play with him in his brass quintet for a few years. I always appreciated the fact that he would call me to see if I was available to play in a group or gigs he was in if there was an opening for a trombone. My sincere condolences to all his family and I’m sure he’s still playing in all your hearts.

As one of Uncle Ralph´s nieces, we used to got to his house for Christmas Eve when I was young. I always think every year how much fun we had. We sang partridge in a pear tree, joked around, ate good homemade food (the meatballs were so good) played with our cousins and usually attempted to play pool in the basement as well as the pin ball machine. Auntie Betty and cousins and all the family, Uncle Ralph can rest now with Gram and Allyson. I´m so sorry for everyone´s loss. Even though everyone will miss him we will keep our memories of him alive

One of the nicest and seemingly most life-loving people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. Sad to learn of his passing but glad he enjoyed his (so-called ;-) “retirement”. My greatest sympathies to his family and friends.

I met Ralph in August 1989 in a job interview at Cedarcrest Hospital in Newington. He hired me as a psychiatric social worker. It was one of best things that happened to me. I retired in 2000, but stayed on as a volunteer chaplain (and social worker when needed) until 2010 when the hospital closed. He was always so good to me and to everyone he dealt with! He played his trumpet for my mother at her 80th birthday. May he rest in peace and may his family find confort in their faith and in each other!

Ralph was a founding member (1979) of the Middletown Symphonic Band. Along with Santo Fragilio and Jimmy Salonia, he was essential in establishing the initial vision and direction of the group. In addition to soloing as lead trumpet player throughout his tenure, he devoted countless hours serving on the board of directors including a several year term as band president. On behalf of the band, we extend our deepest sympathy to Betty and the Matteo family.

To Ralph's Family: Ralph and I went all through school together, beginning with Kindergarten at St. Sebastian's School, then onto Middletown High-Class of 1959. Ralph was a life-long friend, a great guy, an awesome trumpet player who always managed to stay upbeat and keep a smile on his face. He was a devoted father and grandfather and cherished his wonderful family. He will be sorely missed by his loving wife, Betty, his children, his sisters, family members and many friends. Sending my deepest sympathy, caring and prayers to all those who knew and loved Ralph and may he have peace with the Angels in Heaven.

Fondly,
Johanna (Turro) Kerr

I will remember Ralph as a devoted father and grandfather who cherished his family above all. His music enriched his life and brought joy to those lucky enough to hear his genius at the trumpet. I feel honored to have had him in my life as a fantastic brother-in-law and I will miss him.
