Richard Thompson Obituary

Thompson, Richard Lloyd
Richard Lloyd Thompson was an extraordinary man and embodiment of hope for many throughout his 87 years. His was a life of tremendous accomplishment, humility, integrity, exemplified by his compassionate heart, caring spirit, and willingness to offer a word of encouragement to everyone he met.
Richard was the beloved husband of Betty J. Thompson, of Middletown, Connecticut and passed away on April 1, 2021. In addition to his faithful wife of 57 years, he is also loved and mourned by his daughter Claudette Renee Thompson and granddaughter Joy Renee Thompson of Atlanta, Georgia. He was predeceased by his dearest son, Richard Lloyd Thompson II, Esq.
Richard was born in Statesville, North Carolina on December 15, 1933 where he attended the Mary Potter Academy and received his High School diploma from Oxford City Schools. He matriculated at Fayetteville State Teachers College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1956 where he was inducted into the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Delta Gamma Chapter. In the Fall of 1956, after graduating from college, Richard was drafted into the Army where he spent two years; one of which was served in Germany.
Richard came to Hartford and began his teaching career in the Spring of 1959 at the Dominick F. Burns Elementary School. In 1969, at the conclusion of ten years as a 6th grade teacher at the Burns School, he completed a Master's degree in Education at the University of Hartford. Richard continued his graduate studies at the University of Connecticut where he successfully completed a program of study beyond the Master's degree, for the 6th year diploma in Professional Education. While at UConn he distinguished himself as a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Delta Kappa, a professional fraternity in education.
It was during his final stages at UConn, that Richard was appointed as the first black principal with the Middletown School System. His appointment in 1971 at Bielefield Elementary School came at the closing of the predominantly black Hubbard Elementary School and the mixing of its population with Bielefield School's largely white student body. Through the strength of his character, he was able to guide the school through a period of social uneasiness as a newly racially integrated school. During his 19-year tenure, he also served as Principal for Farm Hill and Spencer Elementary schools. He considered it an achievement that he helped to educate generations of students in Middletown, having their lives positively impacted by him.
Richard continued as an educational administrator in Middletown in the role of Director of Title I. During his stint as Title I Director, Richard became affiliated with the State-wide Connecticut Association of Compensatory Education Administrators (C.A.C.E.A.). He was President of CACEA for five years. He had become an institution within the Middletown School System with over 25 years of service, when he retired in 1997.
Richard Thompson's contributions extended far outside the school. He served on Middletown's Planning and Zoning Commission, the Charter Revision Commission, Middletown's Youth Services Committee, and the Salvation Army Advisory Board. To illustrate the broad variety of his community involvement, he was a member of the American Legion, Post 206 of Middletown and named an honorary deputy by the Middlesex County Sherriff's Association, and he also served as a Middlesex County Justice of the Peace. In addition, Richard was a local and State delegate for Middletown's Democratic Town Committee.
Despite the broad range of his community service, Richard was a dedicated and faithful member of Union Baptist Church of Hartford for over 60 years. He was honored to serve as a Deacon for 28 years and delighted whenever he was asked to lead the prayer.
Richard was a loving husband, father, grandfather, cousin and uncle to a host of nieces and nephews. His friendly spirit and kind heart will never be forgotten.
Visitation will be held on Friday, April 16, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 a.m. at Union Baptist Church, 1921 Main Street, Hartford, CT. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Middletown, CT. To leave an online message of condolence, or to view a live stream of the funeral service, please visit www.carmonfuneralhome.com.

Mr. Thompson was a wonderful person. I got to know him personally when I worked at the Board of Education. We would always have a laugh about him being a brother of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and me an Omega Sweetheart.
Mr. Thompson always had an encouraging word to say to me. I will miss running into him in the bookstore.

As a student at Bielefeld elementary school his daily mantra of “ peace, love , and cooperation” resonated with me. He along with other educators instilled in me a love of learning and a desire to become an educator. As a young teacher, I had the opportunity to get to know him as a warm and friendly administrator who was quick to laugh and thrilled that I had chosen to become a teacher in our district. He was a gem.

My Sincere condolences to his wife Betty and the family. Mr. Thompson was a Class Act and one of the cadre of mentors I consulted and held close and dear when I needed a thought, a word or historical context before making decisions on behalf of the community I serve.... the layers are peeling down to you and me.

Let us all step up our game and carry on the mission folks like Mr. Thompson carried forward to us. Young people need to know of citizens like this; local shoulders we stand on. Peace & Blessings to the family, friends, students and colleagues of this extraordinary Soul. Grady Faulkner, Councilman City of Middletown Ct.

I'm incredibly saddened to hear of Mr. Thompson's passing. I had the good fortune of having him as my principal at Farm Hill School. He was truly one of the kindest men around. I had a lot of troubles at school caused by anxiety and he was always caring, empathetic, and quick with a story to put a smile on my face...I remember him having the warmest smile. I don't know if he ever truly knew the enormous impact he had on me and all his students, but I'm incredibly grateful to him. I was able to see him around town when I was older and enjoyed reminiscing with him. He was an incredible gift to our community and I know countless people are mourning his loss. My deepest condolences to his family.

I am so saddened by this loss.
I met Claudette Renee in JA, November 1998. We remained in contact and I then had the privilege to meet the Thompson family plus their close friends and family; this was definitely a turning point and it changed my life too. I became the daughter from the U.K and also enjoyed time spent together during Christmas and other occasions on vacation.
The love, happiness we all experienced while travelling Internationally is irreplaceable. It's those memories that will live on in my heart. Daddy Thompson is one in a million with so much words of encouragement towards doing your best in everything you do.
Claudette, Mom and Joy - thank you for allowing me to be part of your family.
Daddy Thompson, Forever in our hearts.

I am grateful for the opportunity of meeting Renee's Dad in prtson Abuja, Nigetia over 2O years ago.I met my "akata" (American parents), as they welcomed us like we had met before as I saw a very patient, caring & loving "teacher" as he talked with our twin sons (who were 8 years old then).Coming from the US to Nigeria was equally an opportunity to bond more with Renée's parents, having forged a great "sisterly" relationship with Renee as we just loved each other the way God brought us together, and it has remained so.Renee is full of care and love due to all the love drawn from "Papa Renée" & "Mama Renee"as we call him in Nigeria, and Joy, who is joy of Renee's life.I wish " Papa Renée " perfect peace as he rests, and pray for comfort for "Mama Renée", Renée , Joy and all his family /loved ones!!

Betty & Family,
I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of my former neighbor and good friend Dick. I can go on and on about our travels and adventures as neighbors, church boys, political arena, family men, Education and so much more. Dick was such a true friend to all who knew him and would do anything he could to lend a helping hand. He had such a joyful spirit and having a good laugh was part of his makeup.
Thanks for being that good friend Richard L-- I will see you down the road.
May the good Lord be with the family at such a time as this.

Mr. Thompson was a great man and a very positive role model for many. I had the good fortune to have had him as my principal at Farm Hill and to have had him personally interact with me and inspire me to the point that I remember his words throughout my life even to this day, and I will never forget the inspiration he gave me. He will be sorely missed. This world needs more men like him. My deepest condolences to his family and friends. May his memory give you comfort and peace.
