John Frey Obituary

John Frey, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully at home on Oct. 23, 2025, surrounded by the people he loved most.

He was born on April 14, 1943, in Fort Madison, to the late Howard and Lynore (Hosford) Frey.

John dedicated 32 years of his life to Owens-Illinois, where he worked diligently in the Human Resources department. He later spent 23 years at Erb's Stove Center, continuing his legacy of hard work and commitment. John was not only known for his professional demeanor but also for the warmth he shared with family and friends alike. He was a teacher at heart, always ready to impart wisdom through memorable tidbits he affectionately called "gems." His humor, welcoming nature, and energy made him a beloved figure in his family.

He proudly served in the United States Army from 1966 to 1968; a Vietnam War veteran. Beyond his career and military service, John found joy in outdoor activities such as yard work, mowing, hunting, fishing, and woodworking. Alongside his beloved wife, Mary Ann (Schroeder) Frey, they traveled extensively across the United States, creating countless cherished memories.

For 34 years, they tent camped before transitioning to an RV for 14 treasured years filled with laughter, adventure, and family bonding. Their grandchildren hold vivid memories of these camping trips, which will forever be a part of their hearts. John was an active member of the Sugarcreek United Methodist Church for 34 years, where he shared his love for music as a member of the choir.

John is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Ann; his children, Anthony (Dawn) Frey and Christine (Jim) Kovacs; his grandchildren, Katie, Anna and Zak Kovacs, AJ (Chelsea) Frey, Megan (Colton) Fender, Arin (JD) Young, and Matthew Frey; and his great-grandchildren, Lainey and Sadie. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Dee Dee (Al) Wiley, and brother-in-law, Jay (Kristi) Schroeder and Rich Miller.

John is preceded in death by his daughter, Catherine Frey; his siblings, Judy Price and Tim Frey; his sister-in-law, Susan Miller; and nephew, Jeff Weddington.

As we remember John, we will hold close the memories of his laughter, warmth, and the countless lessons he imparted. His legacy will live on through the love he cultivated within his family and the many "Gems" he left behind. John Frey will be missed deeply but will remain forever in our hearts.

A cremation will take place with the Miller Funeral Home and Crematory.
