Michael O'Lear Obituary

Michael James O'Lear, 78, of Missoula, Montana, passed away on September 2, 2025. He was born on July 18, 1947, in Evanston, Illinois to James and Winifred O'Lear.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Denise O'Lear; daughters, Sharri O'Lear and Mindy Bierwag (Tyson Bierwag); and his beloved granddaughter, Bella Bierwag.

A lifelong learner and passionate educator, Mike began his working life with a career as an electrical engineer with Montana Power before following his heart into the field of education. He earned a Masters degree in teaching and went on to teach statistics at the University of Montana - a role he took great pride in and where he touched countless lives.

Mike was deeply engaged in his community. A devout Catholic, he was active in St. Anthony's Parish, the Knights of Columbus and found meaning in both his faith and service to others. He was a proud Griz fan and considered himself a "wild north endzoner". He had a keen interest in politics and never shied away from a spirited conversation, especially with those who held different views. He was a regular contributor to the Missoulian's Letters to the Editor, always eager to voice his thoughts with conviction and care.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 22nd, at St. Anthony's Church in Missoula. The rosary service will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. A luncheon will be served after the service, and all who knew Mike are welcome to attend and share in remembering his life and share their stories with his family.

Mike would have wanted to thank all who helped care for him in the past many years, including Dr. Hoover, the staff at Providence Missoula Family Medical, and all the caregivers at Partners in Home Care Hospice.

Mike will be remembered for his generous spirit, sharp mind, and unwavering dedication to helping others. He truly loved a good conversation, a thoughtful debate, and most of all, his family. He will be deeply missed by all who loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent in his name to Family Promise, Knights of Columbus, Partners Hope Foundation, or the Humane Society.
