Henrietta Star Obituary

Henrietta Star, 91, of Mitchell, SD, passed away Thursday, June 5, 2025, at Firesteel Healthcare Center in Mitchell. Visitation will be Saturday, June 28, from 2-4:00 PM at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a 3:00 PM prayer service. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Corsica, SD. Henrietta was born March 13, 1934, to Harm and Nancy (Dykstra) Dyk on the family farm west of Platte, SD. She was the third of seven children. Her childhood consisted of country school, church, farm chores, and caring for her younger siblings. After graduating from high school, she worked at the K & K Store as a bookkeeper and helped at home. On August 13, 1954, Henrietta married Donald J. Star in Platte. Together, they had four children. She ran a daycare, took care of foster children, and was a school cook for ten years. In 1987, they purchased the Parkway Motel and enjoyed the business for 18 years. Once they retired, Henrietta and Donald moved to Mitchell. They attended CRC in Corsica for 50 years, and later First Reformed Church after moving to Mitchell. Henrietta enjoyed volunteer work, traveling, gardening, crafting and spending time with family and friends. Henrietta is survived by her sons, Harlan (Joyce) and Dale (Lisa) all of Mitchell; daughters, Nancy (Steve) Gage of Sioux Falls and Ione (Larry) Stein of Colorado Springs, CO; siblings, Harriet Namminga of Tyndall, SD, Gerald Dyk of Platte, SD, Billie Childress of West Chicago, IL, and Carolyn Hofmen of Brookfield, WI; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her parents; and siblings, Dick Dyk and Clair Dyk.
