Alfred Buchanan Obituary

ALFRED HENNINGS BUCHANAN NOV 1919 ~ FEB 2008 Al Buchanan - husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on Saturday, February 16th, 2008 in Turlock, California. The youngest of nine children born to Mary Jane and William Jefferson Buchanan, he was born in Blanchard, Oklahoma and raised in Fairfax, Oklahoma. Following the death of his father, he moved with family to California in the late 1930's where he started his career picking cotton in the fields of Pixley, California. After proudly serving his country during WWII as a Merchant Marine, Al moved to the Turlock area and married Juanita Devore in 1946. They were married for 49 years and raised two sons before her passing in 1995. Al Buchanan will always be known for the legacy of excellence, craftsmanship and integrity that he created through the construction company he founded in 1949. That is not only the way he ran his business, but the way he lived his entire life. He was a godsend and a true blessing in the lives of the people who knew him. The authenticity of his character emanated through his warm smile, soft heart and silent strength. He found great joy in so many things in life. Some of his favorites were: spending time at his houseboat at Lake Don Pedro, taking trips to Pismo Beach with his sand rail, playing his guitar with the senior band, playing cards, having his morning coffee at Fail's Donut's and afternoon lunches at Costco with Lucille and their good friends. A great man who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his wife Lucille, his two sons Dennis (Sherry) Buchanan, Danny Buchanan, two step daughters Shirley (Clyde) King, Sandy (Jai) Hilton, eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and one step great grandchild. Visitation will be at Allen Mortuary Thursday, February 21st from 12-7pm. Services will be Friday, February 22nd at 10 am at Allen Mortuary in Turlock. We only knew Al for a short period of his life. We met Al in the Turlock Costco food court with his sweet wife Lucille last June. He noticed my 5 year old son because of the large cowboy hat on his head that day. He loved to see my children in Costco during the lunch hour. Al loved children and our family loved sweet Al. We are grateful to have known him in this life. We love you Al and God bless. Matt, Kelly, Taylor and Berry~
