Barbara Nelson Obituary

Barbara Elaine Nelson
March 8, 1945 - April 15, 2022
Modesto, California - Barbara Elaine Nelson (Reid) of Modesto, California, passed away suddenly and peacefully with all of her family by her side at Memorial Medical Center on April 15, 2022.
Barbara was born on March 8, 1945, to Walter and Jeanette Reid in Modesto, California. She was the second born child of the family; preceded in birth by her brother, Ken Reid of Modesto.
Barbara was an honored queen of the International Order of Job's Daughters, and a past member of the Senior Phi Gamma Charity Club. She graduated from Downey High School and attended Modesto Junior College before she wed her high school sweetheart, James Thomas Watson of Modesto.
Barbara and James had three children together; Melinda Michelle Trevino (Watson), Cynthia Colette Watson (who passed shortly after she was born), and James Thomas Watson Jr. of Turlock. In addition to being a devoted mother, Barbara was a Principal's Secretary for Modesto City Schools for 26 years through retirement. Barbara was adored by many friends, co-workers, and students within the district.
In 1982, Barbara married Larry Nelson of Modesto and moved out to Larry's family homestead in the country. Country life created new hobbies for Barbara; she became an avid gardener, home renovator, and entertainer extraordinaire. A full house, no matter the occasion, brought her so much joy. She was the greatest host; never allowing an empty plate or glass, and always serving a great dining experience. Larry passed away in 2006 and Barbara continued to live at the lovely ranch for the remainder of her life.
In retirement, Barbara really enjoyed her volunteer work with Community Hospice of Modesto and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She hardly ever missed a game, or a wrestling match, and she was always the best cheerleader. Barbara also enjoyed time spent with her friend, Joe Avelar, and her grief recovery support group. They would travel, attend events, and entertain one another at any given opportunity. In 2008, Barbara received all of her Catholic sacraments at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, and Joe was her sponsor.
In life, Barbara was the most compassionate and selfless person. She had the ability to carry on a conversation with just about anyone and always saw the best in everyone she met. Barbara was smart, eloquent, business savvy, kind, patient, and so much more. She will be greatly missed by many.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Jeanette Reid; her daughter, Cynthia Colette Watson; her grandson, Adrian Trevino; and her in-laws.
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Melinda Trevino (Roy); son, James Watson (Angela); five grandchildren, Anthony Belerique, Allie Lahman (Jeramy), Benjamin Watson, Elijah Watson, Elisabeth Watson; one great grandchild, Dominik Trevino; brother, Ken Reid (Gayle); niece, Corrie Fuhr (Steve); nephew, Ron Reid (Amy); many friends and her dearest friend, Joe Avelar.
In honor of Barbara, a Rosary and Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, 2602 S Walnut Rd, Turlock, CA 95380, on Friday, April 29, 2022, at 9:30 am followed by a reception. All family and friends are welcome. For those who cannot attend in person, here is a livestream link of the service: www.YouTube.com/lusomedia
In lieu of flowers, Barbara's family welcomes donations to Community Hospice as an expression of sympathy.

Words cannot express how kind, thoughtful, caring, wonderful, and just a down-to-earth nice person Barbara was. I was fortunate to meet Barbara in August 1997. She was Elliott Education Center (Modesto City Schools) Principal Secretary. I had just been transferred to Elliott . I was not really feeling sure of my new teaching position because I had heard so many rumors about Elliott and to be truthful, I was not feeling very confident about my new position, Barbara reached out to me, introducing and welcoming me to Elliott. She invited me to come to school, gave me a tour, personally introduced me to everyone, and made sure that I had everything I needed to start the school year with. For a long time, she made sure that everyday she touched base with me, checking to see how I was doing, offering to see what she could do to make me feel welcomed and appreciated.
I always thought and felt that I was special but to find out, that was how she made EVERYONE feel! It did not matter what your job position was, whether you were a parent, student, or a MCS district employee; she made you feel special and cared about. Barbara was not just Elliott´s Principal Secretary, she was the ultimate secretary and she was our "school mom." She took an interest in you and cared about you.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, Barbara´s family, during this time. Thank you for sharing her with us!

My sweet Nana,

Your presence has been one of the greatest gifts of my life! From day one, you´ve been there to give me a bath, wipe tears, bandage scraped knees, mend clothing and broken hearts. There wasn´t really anything that you couldn´t do or couldn´t figure out. I will cherish the precious memories that I have of you forever. My future children will know all about you . I will forever miss you, your voice, your hugs, your advice, your loving and cheerful presence. Rest In Peace Nana!

We met Barbara through Community Hospice Bereavement Support Group in early 2007. We had all lost our loving spouses. From the first day we all cried together, supported each other, loved each other and formed a loving friendship. Lunches, dinners, going to the Gallo, plays in Sonora, musicals, cruises, local trips and long distance trips. Our friendship led to 2 books written by Barbara about how a Hospice group was so successful. We will always cherish our precious memories of Barbara. Our hearts are now broken, please accept our deepest sympathy. Ellen & Warren

I am truly heart broken to hear this. Barb has lived next to our ranch since i was 10. I met jimmy when i was 12 and she was one of the kindest persons i have ever known. They helped me out countless times. took me in and treated me like family since the day i met them. I will never forget her or the awesome person she was. She also raised a son who was a great friend to me all through school. I know she left this world a much better place than when she came into it. cuz she made everything she ever got involved with better. we are sad to see her go, but heaven is a lucky place as she arrives. thank you for everything Barb. and to jimmy as well.

I had the pleasure of knowing Barb through her husband Larry, who I worked with at the Dept of Ag. She was a great and wonderfull lady. I had gotten together with her at Christmas holiday at her home and some of the retirees Bob Weaver, Joe Duchala and Victor Perry and their wife's, and I can't forget Maryann Klink which they were best of friends. We had the best day and good laughs. Of course we talked about goods times and had a great meal, that she prepared with the help of her partner Joe. She will greatly be missed by us all. Rest in peace Barb, your friend Bertie
