Billy Shanahan Obituary

Billy Rex Shanahan II, 83, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2025, in Modesto, California.

Born on September 14, 1941 in rural Indiana, he was named after his uncle who served in the Air Force. Billy graduated from Madison Heights High School in Anderson, Indiana in 1960. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1970. Following his military service, he dedicated his career to working in copy repair, maintenance, and mechanical roles for churches and their schools. He later retired as a mechanic from Diamond Walnut in Stockton, California.

Billy was a devoted member of Neighborhood Church of Modesto for 47 years. Deeply committed to veterans' causes, he was active in the American Legion, VFW, and the 40&8. He held numerous positions over the years including Commander of Post 74, honor guard member, and chaplain.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Patty; children Lora (daughter-in-law), Mike (Diane), Carmen Best (Ricky), Patrick (Melanie), and Erin Renninger (Josh); along with 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Ralph and Mary; sisters Peggy McDavid and Beverly; son Jim; and grandson Ryan.

A viewing will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Salas Brothers Funeral Chapel. A graveside service will follow on Friday, September 19, at 10:00 a.m. at Lakewood Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the 40&8 Nurses Training Scholarship.

Billy never met a stranger-he was always quick with a joke or an offer to help. He loved his family deeply, and many of his friends became like family. His warmth and generosity will be remembered by all who knew him.

Yesterday

My condolences and prayers for comfort to the Shanahan family. I got to know Bill and Patty thru Neighborhood Church. They served our church family in many ways. Their home group was a special time of bible study and fellowship, a true blessing . I will remember Bill for his faithfulness to God's word, his helpfulness to anyone in need, and his remarkable sense of humor.
