David Allain Obituary

DAVID O'NEILL ALLAIN AUG 18, 1955 - SEPT 24, 2009 David Allain passed away at his home in Turlock following complications of multiple sclerosis. Born in Los Angeles to Lawrence and Mary Allain, he graduated from Royal High School in Simi Valley in 1973. He followed in the footsteps of his father's family in construction while taking courses at Moorpark College, and later worked in Yosemite National Park and Hawaii. David traveled to Louisiana and throughout the U.S. and France tracing family roots. His travels also took him to other parts of Europe and to Egypt, and he lived and worked on a kibbutz (community farm) in Israel. David then spent four years of service with the Peace Corps in Gabon, Africa where he built an infirmary and school in one village and helped complete a school in another. He returned to the States with an enduring love of the Gabonese people and a zeal for conservation that long preceded its current popularity. After completing a year of studies in the Experiment in International Living in Vermont, David returned to California and settled in the Sierra foothill communities of Mariposa and Midpines. There he continued honing his carpentry craftsmanship and helped build many fine residential homes while continuing his studies at Merced College. When David's health prevented him from continuing as a carpenter, he moved to Turlock and earned a bachelor's degree in social studies and certificate in counseling from California State University at Stanislaus, where he also pursued a master's degree. He volunteered in the Help One Student at a Time (H.O.S.T.) program, worked as a counselor for the local elementary and high schools in Ceres and Turlock, and was an avid scholar with a keen appreciation of history and the U.S. constitution. David enjoyed living in Turlock, where he always seemed to meet an acquaintance and to spark a friendly smile as he wended his wheelchair through the markets and shops, post office and restaurants, reminding us that for him, despite his physical challenges, every day was a beautiful day in paradise. David's attitude never seemed to flag and when asked how he was doing, his ready reply was, I'm doing my best, by golly!'' David is survived by his brother, Gregory (Kim) of Temecula, sisters Melissa (James Botsford) Allain-Botsford of Castro Valley and Tamara (Gerry) Allain-Montange of San Antonio, Texas, nephew Cody Allain, and nieces Sara and Claire Botsford and Jessica Allain. He is predeceased by his parents, Lawrence and Mary Allain, brother Peter and sister Kimberly. A celebration of his life will be held in the Los Angeles area. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions would be appreciated and may be made to: National Multiple Sclerosis Society, P.O. Box 4527, New York, NY 10163. Arrangements made by Turlock Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 425 N. Soderquist Rd., Turlock, CA 95380. www.modbee.com/obituaries

If there was ever a person I would want to be modeled after it would be Dave. In fact, everyone should be modeled after Dave. If so, there surely would be world peace. His "life is great" attitude was gift that he tried to blanket everyone with. I'll miss him!

I just read about David passing, and I was caught off guard, shocked, and saddned! I've known David since 2004, and he was an amazing human being! We had great discussions about politics, motorcycles, current events, humanity, etc... He also gave me some great history lessons, and I admired all that he did in life. He was so intelligent, and his heart was greater than his wisdom. He was an inspiration to me, and his fortitude, love of life, and love of people came naturally to him. He was also a frugal man that could not waste anything. He was "Green" way before it was popular to be "Green." I wouild try to tell him he should treat himself to simple things like a favorite food of his, or things that would make his life easier with coping with MS and daily living. However, he could not justify spending unless it was an absolute necessity. I'll miss him greatly, the world has lost a truly peaceful soul, but Heaven has gained an angel.

I knew Dave in Gabon and after he was a wonderful and loving man with a gift for sharing his happiness and spirit with all those around him. We from the Gabon Peace Corps loved him very much.

My husband, Buddy Shanks, was David's Peace Corps director in Gabon. That was years before I met or married my husband. The two of them have kept in touch all these years. After Buddy and I married in 2003, David called and talked with me like we were old friends. We spoke frequently in emails and on the phone. He was so supportive and was always asking about us, not ever focusing on himself or his own trials or tribulations. From the little I knew of him, he was a gentle, kind soul; one that will go on loving. He is already missed by Buddy and Aly Shanks. Rest in peace our friend.

I knew David in Mariposa and his time spent here in the valley. We always had discussions on the cure for his MS (he was fit in Mariposa). One time he had me put live honey bees on his back as a treatment. Gave me the willies but I complied so as to only help. Fixed his computers now and then and always encouraged to move forward. Dave IS special, and always will be. His love of life and humanity sets an example for all of us. Really sorry to hear of his passing... wanted him to heal very much.... Many in Mariposa are going to be saddened because he touched the community in a good way and was well known.

I don't know David but, WOW! What a remarkable human being. He is a great example of character, faithfulness, and strength. I have not heard of another person making the most of their abilities like this young man did. I will remember him whenever I am feeling sorry for myself. David is an inspiration!

I am so sorry that I did not have the honor and pleasure of meeting David. His story is one of inspiration as to what the spirit of determination and zest for life are about. May the love of family and friends give you strength and encouragement. Isaiah 41:10 reads, "Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Do not gaze about, for I am your God. I will fortify you. I will really help you. I will really keep fast hold of you with my right hand of righteousness." Your family and friends are in my prayers.
