Francis Bodeson Obituary

Francis Earl Bodeson
Aug 14, 1927 - Oct 8, 2011
Francis Earl "Bud" Bodeson passed away peacefully Saturday, October 8th at the age of 84, surrounded by his loving family. He was a third generation native of Ripon, California, his family settling here in the 1850's. In his youth, Francis was active in Boy Scouts, excelled in music and received national honors in high school debate and leadership. After graduation, Francis enlisted in the Navy as a Pharmacist 3rd Class where he trained and served as a Medical Corpsman in Corona, California during World War II.
After the war, Francis returned to Ripon and attended Modesto Junior College. During this time he met and married Gertrude Schweitzer Bodeson, the love of his life. Together, they produced six children. Every summer Francis took his family camping in the Sierras and along the beaches of California, instilling in his children a love of nature they share to this day.
In 1954, at the age of 26, Francis was appointed Postmaster of Ripon where he worked until retiring at age 55. Francis was very active in his home town civic affairs, serving as president of the Ripon Jaycees; president and director of the Ripon Chamber of Commerce; secretary of the Ripon Lion's Club; president of the Ripon Fireman's Association and volunteer fireman; past Noble Grand and thirty year member of the local IOOF Lodge; an American Legion, and a member of the Congregational Church. This year he was chosen to serve as Grand Marshall of the upcoming 50th Annual Ripon Almond Blossom Festival this February, an event he helped pioneer and support.
Upon retirement Francis was excited to continue his favorite hobbies of jogging, golfing, camping and traveling. He and Trudy traveled the globe, visiting all 50 U.S. states and 37 foreign countries. A few months before his death, you could find Francis walking the streets of Ripon greeting friends and strangers he met along the way.
Francis' wife preceded him in death last December. He is survived by his six children: Janyce Bodeson, Mary Bodeson, Francis James Bodeson, Deborah Glass, Patricia Hansen and Robert Bodeson; 12 grandchildren and 5 great grand children.
A memorial service will be held at Deegan Funeral Chapel in Ripon on Friday, October 21st at 1:00pm. After the service, the Bodeson children will receive guests at the family home at 416 S. Elm Ave., Ripon. There is an online guest book available for you to share your condolences at www.deeganfuneralchapels.com

I have started writing something several times and just can't get the right words to convey how much Bud and Trudy meant to my life. I have know for a long time how much I learned about generosity and love from my time spent at the Bodeson house where everyone was welcome at all times; not to mention it was the most fun to be had in Ripon. I am honored to be considered the 7th Bodeson.. although I am sure there are some that would like to fight me for that title. I can still hear Bud's voice welcoming someone into his home with enthusiasm and genuine pleasure. Thank you Bud and Trudy for everything.

Such a rich life. Such a legacy. The entire town of Ripon, as well as present and future generations will continue to benefit from the many works he has done throughout a lifetime of service. I am proud that he was my uncle, and sad that I couldn't see more of all my Bodeson cousins throughout the years. I have a large, professionally framed montage of the series of articles the Ripon Record did on the Bodeson family, and in particular on "Uncle Bud" a few years back. He truly will always be remembered for the example he gave us all to follow.

I will not be able to make the memorial but I am glad I was able to give you a hug on the day. He was such a good man and great father, as evidenced by all of you. He will always be with you so no need to be sad. You should celebrate all the joy he gave all of you... Sing a song for him, he would love that. Kim Ulrich

Susan and Steven McClanahan
We regret that we will not be attending your dad's services.
We are going to be out of town and not returning until the 22nd.
However: I will never forget your dad, he was a special man. He was always cheerful, good natured, like to tease you with his big smile.
He will be greatly missed.
Love Susie (Thiemann) McClanahan

What a tribute to a fine man. Bud you served your time on Earth, but I know your service is not done. You and Trudy are together again and will continue to serve from heaven above. You two have given three generations of productive citizens to our great country and your legacy will live on in them. May you both rest together in peace.
When I shared Bud's passing with my son Alex, who had the pleasure of joining the Bodeson's on one of their many family trips to Pinecrest, paused and asked how old he was. I said he was 84. Alex looked to the heavens and said, "Well Bud, that was a good run!" We chuckled, but the more it sunk in the more I enjoyed the comment. Bud you had a great run on Earth, we will all miss your joyfulness, but you have been called to greater order now.
To the legacy he left behind... Celebrate his wonderful life, he would have wanted it that way!
