Geoffrey Hall Gilbert

January 30, 2012
Geoffrey passed away suddenly from heart failure.  He was survived by his beloved companion, his dog Max, and his brother Jay Gilbert and sister Eleanor Sue Gilbert.  He is also survived by his niece, Robyn Petersen, and nephews Brett and James Gilbert.  He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Banks Gilbert in 1969 and his mother, Helen Hogan Gilbert in 1970.
Geoffrey grew up in Oakdale.  At age 14, he became an Eagle Scout, Scouting's highest honor.  At Oakdale High School he played football, baseball and golf.  Geoffrey was valedictorian of the class of 1969.  He was accepted with honors at the University of California, Los Angeles.  He graduated with a B.S. degree from U.C. Berkeley in 1976.  While attending college, Geoffrey became an accomplished pilot.
After college, Geoff became an entrepreneur.  He had a business selling and installing satillite dishes.  He also had a cellular phone sales company.
Geoff traveled extensively.  In the 1970's in India he met Pete Townsend of "The Who" and the two became lifelong friends. Geoff attended many rock concerts in America and Europe.  At "The Who" concerts he always had backstage passes.  Geoff was a follower of the Indian mystic and spiritual leader Meher Baba.
Geoff will be missed by his many friends and family.  At his request there will be no services.

When I was in graduate school, Geoff's room mate was my clinical supervisor. I would have the privilege to interface with Geoff. His amiability, sportsmanship & high problem solving energy was a joy to behold. I wish Geoff all happiness and love.

Geoff was such a happy fellow and so helpful and dear. Have thought of him often over the years after he moved from Walnut Creek. Though he finished his life's work fairly early, he'll soon be on to his next adventure in another human form. I was happy to have known him!

I first heard of Meher Baba from Geoff while at UC Berkeley graduate school. Geoff had applied for a research position at the Center for Environmental Structure. I hired him and we would talk about Meher Baba all the way to Martinez and back each day...I will be forever grateful to him for that singular gift. God be with you Geoff~

Geoff was someone my life path had only intended to meet once. The one time I met him, he was at a The Who concert I went too for my 17th birthday. He was a very nice, warming and open man. It is of sadness to hear of his passing, it was a pleasure to have met someone with a kind heart like his.

There was to be a gathering, after a high school football game. I didn't go to the game this night and ended up awaiting my friends at Geoff's house. There were only a few of us awaiting on the others. Geoff made me feel very welcome (even though early). He was exceptionally kind, compassionate, and open. He said he was feeling a little down that night, but due to our talk, was feeling much better. I felt the same about him. I felt better having met him. People branch out in life and we all have our own roads, but I am always touched with the acts of kindness that seem to touch our lives, and leave a lasting impression. My encounter with Geoff was one of those. I loved reading about his life, and his many accomplishments. My heart felt expressions to his loved ones and friends.
