James Ninnis Obituary

James Ray Ninnis

August 11, 1927 - March 26, 2026

Modesto, California - Jim Ninnis, born on August 11, 1927 passed away on March 26, 2026 in Modesto. He was preceded in death by his beloved first wife of 54 years, Beverly Jeanne Ninnis (Helpe), his brothers Earl and Will Ninnis, and his sister Noel Stone. He will be dearly missed by his beloved second wife Wesley Ann (Jones) Ninnis and by his three children and their spouses: Tom Ninnis of San Francisco; Wendy Revell (Jim) of Bentonville, AR; and Jan-Marie Wolfe (Patrick) of Suwanee, GA. He also leaves six cherished grandchildren: Jessica, David (Ariel), and Angela Revell, and Madelyn, Emma, and Zachary Wolfe.

After Jim graduated from Berkeley High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, actively serving in the closing period of WWII at Fort Ord. Later, he continued his military service in the U.S. Naval Reserves, rising to Chief Petty Officer.

Jim and Bev raised their family in Walnut Creek and Fresno, while Jim worked in purchasing and management for Moran Supply, headquartered in Hayward. In 1979, Jim and Bev relocated to Modesto, where Jim went on to build a second career in residential real estate, helping many families, many of whom became close friends.

After Bev's passing, Jim and Wes met in a church Bible study group. Soon, they became each other's close confidant and support, and joyfully pledged their love before family and friends, marrying in 2109. Wes's large extended family welcomed Jim with open arms, and he especially enjoyed being part of their annual Cousin Camp with upwards of one hundred family members gathering each summer. In 2024, Wes and Jim moved to Bethel Retirement Community in Modesto where they have enjoyed loving care and companionship.

Jim was deeply devoted to his faith, serving as an acolyte and as a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was Grand Knight of the St. Frances of Rome Council #13321 in 2004-2005. Jim was an avid outdoorsman, awarded photographer, kayaker, bowler, SF Giants fan, scout leader, fisherman, pelican aficionado, and reader. Jim's passions reflected his curiosity and zest for life. Known for his outgoing and friendly nature, he loved telling "Dad jokes", backslapping, sending funny birthday cards, and directing you to the nearest donut shop. He will be remembered as a patriot, community leader, and a loving family man.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on April 15th at 10 AM at St Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Riverbank, CA. Jim will be buried on April 16th at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA. The service will take place at 10:30 AM.
