Jonadene Azlin Obituary

Jonadene Kay Azlin

December 18, 1938 - November 29, 2024

Modesto, California - Jonadene (Jonnie) K. Azlin passed away suddenly on November 29th, 2024; she was 85 years old. Her warm presence and caring nature left an undeniable mark on all who knew her.

Jonadene was born on December 18th, 1938, in La Crosse, IN. She was the youngest of three children born to John and Honi Cole.

After graduating high school in 1957, Jonadene joined the Women's Army Corps and completed basic training in 1958 at Fort McCellan, AL. She was assigned to Fort Gordon, GA, where she met the man she would marry, Gordon Azlin, on a blind date. After a two-week whirlwind romance, they were married on March 3rd, 1958, in Akin, SC. Jonadene completed the Teletype Operation Course and was stationed overseas in Germany. Gordon, who was also in the army was stationed in Cape Canaveral, FL. The newlyweds spent their first year of marriage apart but passed the time by writing letters to each other. Jonadene was reunited with her husband in 1959, and they settled in Bakersfield, CA and started their family. In 1973 they moved to Modesto and raised their family. Jonadene and her husband shared nearly 55 years of marriage before his passing in 2013.

After a 28-year career with the Sylvan Union School District, Jonadene began a second career as a volunteer with the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department STARS program. The STARS program is a volunteer program in which active adult citizens give of their time, knowledge, and life experiences for the betterment of the community. Jonadene was a dedicated volunteer who proudly gave 22 years of service to the organization and the community.

After the passing of her husband, Jonadene moved to Bethel Retirement Community where she made many friends over the years. She was a member of the Red Hatters, loved playing cards, and enjoyed the various activities and outings. She was a cherished resident and will be dearly missed.

Jonadene was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon and her sons Kim and David. She is survived by her sons Darrell and Jeff, daughter-in-law Elizabeth, grandson, Kyle (Robin), granddaughter Lauren, and two beautiful great-granddaughters, Jasmine and Imani. Her grand-pup, Bailey will miss spending her days with Grandma at Bethel.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Bethel Retirement Community, 2345 Scenic Drive, Modesto on January 5th at 2:00 p.m.

My deepest condolences to you and your family. I enjoyed getting to know Jonadene over the last few years as I would pick her up to go to our CSEA Retiree meetings. She was a delightful woman, and I will miss her. May she rest in peace. God blessings to the family.

Jonadene was a strong presence in our Stanislaus Sheriff Department's STARS unit. We served together beginning in 2003. She was a devoted member, entering her name on most volunteer opportunities, always proud to wear her STARS uniform. Jonadene will be truly missed.

Dear Family, I have so appreciated knowing Jonnie these past few years. Sharing most holidays with her , Jeff, Elizabeth, Darrell, Kyle and Robin. We enjoyed sharing our stories and gracious hospitality as a family. Jonnie loved to dress up and wear her jewelry. Always lovely. This holiday will be especially hard and we will miss her presence. Rest in forever peace dear sweet lady. You were very loved by all.
