Martha Postma

MARTHA POSTMA JAN. 1, 1928 - SEPT. 17, 2008 Martha Postma was born January 1, 1928. She was the youngest of nine children born to Macheil and Annegje Van Andel and was a lifelong resident of Ripon. Martha was taken to meet her Savior September 17th following a short illness. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Paul and Gerti VanderSchuur, Tom and Jean VanderSchuur, Gale and Jim Tornell and Kathy Wilson all of Ripon, Connie and Jim Gilliland of Denver, CO, Jon and Cindy VanderSchuur of Visalia, step- daughter Judy McKean and husband Ed of Merrillville, IN, step- son Charles Postma of Modesto, 16 grandchildren, 7 great-grand children, many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Nell Winters of Ripon and Wilhelmina Van Dyken of Canada. Within the last two years she also shared a special friendship with Bob Neiweg. She was preceded in death by husband Don VanderSchuur in 1971, by her second husband Charles Postma in 1991, and stepdaughter Jeanne Oosterman. Through many joys and sorrows in her life, Martha found great comfort knowing that her Savior was leading her every step of the way. She loved to golf with her friends, fish in Pinecrest and spend time in her beautiful garden. She had a special fondness for flowers, birds, and butterflies. However, her strong faith was most evidenced in her years of service at Immanuel Christian Reformed Church and with Ripon Interfaith Ministries and the Red Cross. While serving with Red Cross, she assisted in disaster relief at 32 natural disaster sites in such places as Guam, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico and witnessed firsthand the effects of Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Katrina. Visitation will be from noon to 4:00 P.M. at Deegan Ripon Memorial Chapel Saturday, September 20th. A private graveside service at Ripon Cemetery on Monday, September 22nd at 2:00 P.M. will be followed by a memorial service at 3:00 P.M. at Immanuel Christian Reformed Church, 517 Orange Ave. in Ripon.
