Martin Arno Obituary

Martin Arno
November 4, 1983 - October 31, 2022
Toronto, Ontario, Canada - Martin Christopher Arno passed away suddenly on October 31, 2022 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. A native of Modesto, California, Martin came to Toronto in 2013 to join the PhD program at the University of Toronto Department for the Study of Religion. During that time, he also served as an instructor and teaching assistant in the department. Martin was a scholar of religion in Mediterranean Antiquity. His dissertation, "Apostles Behaving Badly: Defending the Indefensible in Mediterranean Antiquity," traces how ancient writers sought to rehabilitate their traditions' founding heroes from accusations of damning moral failures. By asking how virtues transformed into vices over time, it constructs a genealogy of morals for Christian antiquity.
Martin graduated from Modesto Junior College, the University of California Santa Barbara, and received an MA degree from University of Chicago. In 2012 Martin joined Teach for America. He completed training at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and taught upper elementary in San Francisco. At every grade level, Martin loved his students and wanted them to succeed.
In addition to his scholarly work, Martin was an accomplished musician. From the time of T's & Greens in Modesto as a teen, through Ill Blooded in California, the Salty Dogs in Chicago and most recently the heavy metal horror band Blood Opera in Toronto, he was the drummer. He appeared in costume in the recent Blood Opera video Be My Victim and many public performances in the Toronto and Niagara Falls areas.
Martin is survived by his parents, Thomas and Heidi (Hennig) Arno, and brother Nick (Eliana) Arno of Modesto, uncles Bertrand Randy Hennig of Washington DC and Robert Arno, aunt Sue Glover of Modesto, members of the band Blood Opera and the faculty, staff and students at the University of Toronto Department for the Study of Religion.
Graveside service will be held Tuesday, November 29 starting at Noon at Lakeside Memorial Park, Hughson.

I am deeply saddened by the news of Martin's untimely passing. I had the privilege of knowing Martin through his participation in two of my graduate seminars at the Centre for the Study of Religion: 'Method & Theory in the Study of Religion' and 'Social Science Perspectives on Early Christianity'. He was a bright light and unique voice in both courses, and immensely liked and appreciated by his fellow students. I was subsequently honored to join Martin's dissertation committee, headed by the distinguished Early Christianity specialists, John Marshall and John Kloppenborg. Martin thought long and deeply about his research interests, and we were all hopeful that a first-rate thesis would eventually come together. Academia will be the poorer for the loss of this promising scholar and generous, caring, and warm-hearted human being. My sincere condolences to Martin's family and friends.

Martin is in the foundation and structure of what makes me. Through my tumultuous youth, he was my base and protector. I am forever grateful. I will never be the same without him. My deepest condolences go out to Heidi, Tom, and Nick.
