Patrick McHugh Obituary

Patrick E. McHugh
March 18, 1936 - January 7, 2016
Patrick E. McHugh, born March 18, 1936 in Stockton, CA entered into peaceful rest and joined his brother John and parents Richard "Dick" McHugh and Lillian McHugh on January 7, 2016, after a long battle with Alzheimer's.  Pat is survived by his wife, Leslie Kalim McHugh of Modesto CA, and his children, Mimi McHugh Truesdail of Oakdale, CA;  Marit McHugh of Kapaa, HI;  and Peter McHugh of Kapaa, HI.  He was Grandpa Huey ("GPH") to Megan Wood and her husband TJ of Sunnyvale, CA and Great Grandpa Huey ("GGPH") to great granddaughters, Keeley and Kennedy.  He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Renee McHugh of Stockton, CA and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a ton of great friends.
Pat attended school in Stockton, CA and entered the real estate business in the late 1960's.  In 1972 he and his family moved to Modesto where he started his own real estate company.  He was a professional realtor his entire career and was the president of the Stanislaus County Board of Realtors in 1977 and was named Outstanding Realtor of the Year in 1979.  He was past director of the California Association of Realtors and retired from Prudential Commercial Real Estate.
Pat was fun loving and had many interests outside of his career and family.  He had a lifelong love of sailing and spent many days sailing the Delta from the Stockton Sailing Club.  He was known as a fierce competitor on race days and when the racing was over he joined fellow sailors and competitors around the BBQ doing what he did best, cooking for friends.  He was the Commodore of the Stockton Sailing Club in 1974 and again in 1993.  In January 2010, Pat was delighted to be honored by the Stockton Sailing Club with the award of Lifetime Membership.  He was also a member of Grindstone Joe's on the Delta where he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Leslie and their many friends on the deck cooking, laughing and telling many tall tales.  In 2011 Pat was honored by the Grindstone Joe Association when they named him an Honorary Member.  Pat's BBQ skills were legendary and Pat was usually at the center of the kitchen directing the cooking as only he could.  He was thrilled to put out a great meal to share with his friends.
Pat was an avid snow skier and was president of the Modesto Ski Club in 1981 and again in 1986 through 1988.  He was the president of the Bay Area Council of Skiers in 1991 and 1992.  When his skiing days were over, he took up golf and scored a hole in one at Dryden Park Golf Course in Modesto on June 12, 1992.  Pat and Leslie enjoyed many cruises and they loved spending Christmas in Disneyland and their June wedding anniversary in Yosemite.
There will be a celebration of Pat's life on Friday, January 22, at 2:00 pm, at Franklin & Downs McHenry Chapel, 1050 McHenry Avenue, Modesto, CA.  Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials made in Pat's name, to Community Hospice Foundation, 4368 Spyres Way, Modesto, CA. 95356 or the Modesto Chapter of Alzheimer's Association, 700 McHenry Ave. Suite B Modesto, CA. 95350.

I worked with Patrick for many years at Prudential Commercial Real Estate. He was a grumpy bear of a man, but deep down he was a soft teddy bear at heart. I loved that about him. He always knew the best restaurants to visit no matter where your travel plans took you. I learned a lot from Patrick. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and his family. Rest in peace, my friend.

So sorry to hear about Pat's passing. Pat and I were first cousins related through two (Dick and Jim) of the eight boys born of John W McHugh and Mary Jane Devine of Oakdale, CA and later Stockton, CA. Pat and I both attended St. Agnes grammar school in Stockton, CA. and then went on different paths after grammar school. I went on to Lodi High School, then college and graduate school, and then moved to the East Coast of United States. We did not see much of one another for many years. We had some email contact when I was researching our McHugh ancestry. While visiting California, my son Neal and I had lunch with Pat in Oakdale on October 6, 2008. After lunch, Pat was kind enough to take us on a tour of some Oakdale area sites connected to our McHugh and Devine ancestors. We visited the small cemetery where our great grandparents (Francis Devine and Mary Ford Devine) are buried. See the attached picture of Pat and myself at this site. The cemetery is located at the site of the old 26-Mile-House where the Fords and Devines farmed in the Eugene area, and our McHugh grandparents were married. Our final stop was at the location of our grandfather McHugh's farm, a few miles southeast of Oakdale. Pat had made arrangements with the current owners for us to view the area. We will always remember Pat for his generosity with his time and in helping us to learn a little bit more about the McHugh ancestry from his side of the family. Rest in peace............... Jim McHugh, Bradenton, FL and Lake Placid, NY.

So very sorry for your loss.

My sincere condolences to the McHugh family. Patrick was once great guy! I knew him from the Modesto Ski Club and he always had a smile and a kind word to those he met and kept the Ski Club meetings light and entertaining with his great sense of humor and quick wit. How he loved his sailing and was quick to share it with those interested. He will be deeply missed. With Sympathy. Gloria Bracco, MSC Pres 1984-85

Mimi, Marit and Pete ~ My heart and positive thoughts have been your way all week. Talking with Marit, I know your all sad but also relieved because his true self was gone awhile ago and to me he was bigger than life.(At least to a 5th grader and a very nice man throughout school.) Strength and love your way as you navigate the next week. Wish I could be there for you all...Love, Shawney
