Elizabeth Phan Obituary

MONTEREY, CA – Elizabeth Vinh Phan passed away peacefully surrounded by her devoted family after a prolonged illness on the Sunday morning of May 4, 2014. She passed over to Our Loving and Merciful God at the age of 92 and is in communion with her husband of 68 years, Francois Thang Hoang and her parents. Elizabeth Phan was a loving wife, caring mother, protective grandmother and doting great grandmother.
She was born in Hue, Vietnam to Mr. Tuan Phan and Mrs. My Pham. Elizabeth was married to Francois Thang Hoang in 1948 in Vietnam and was a tireless and devoted mother of 11 children – 10 natural and one adopted. She migrated to Monterey in 1984 to rejoin the rest of her family and to care for her then-surviving father. Elizabeth Phan was a devout Catholic and a strong believer in higher education and constantly encouraged her offspring to pursue any and every possible educational opportunity. She herself obtained two AA degrees at MPC after the age of 68.
Elizabeth Phan was predeceased by her wonderful husband in July 2009; her parents, a younger sister,; a younger brother; and her beloved daughter, Thanh Thanh in 1966.
She is survived by 10 of her children – her adopted daughter, Duc Lanh and spouse and their daughter, Lan Anh of Saigon, Vietnam; her daughter, Thuy Hoang and her two children, Son and Hali of Seaside; her son, Valentine Hoang and spouse and their four children, Michael, Andrew, Alex and Valerie of San Jose; her widowed daughter, Van Hoang and her daughters, Anne and Elise of Dallas, TX; her daughter, Ann Hoang-Ordaz and spouse and their three children, Joseph, Josephine and Joel of Monterey; her son, Tuan Hoang and spouse and their three children, Vivian, Leyna and Jonathan of Tustin; her son, James Hoang of South San Francisco; her son, Richard Hoang of Maui; her daughter, Hoai Hoang McLaughlin and spouse and their three children, Ryan, Darby and Dylan of Pleasanton; and her youngest son, Hung Hoang of Monterey. Elizabeth Phan also left behind 18 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, two younger brothers and a younger sister.
Viewing and Visitation will be at the Mission Mortuary on Friday, May 9, 2014 from 2:00-7:00pm.
The Funeral and Memorial Mass will be at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Seaside from 11:30am -12:30pm on Saturday, May 10, 2014. Elizabeth Phan's final resting place will be next to her beloved husband at the San Carlos Cemetery on Saturday after the Mass. There will be a reception immediately after the interment at the St. Francis Xavier Parish Hall from 2:00pm -5:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your local Catholic church in Elizabeth Phan's name.
