Gabriel Rosenfeld Obituary
CHAPPAQUA, NY – Gabriel I. Rosenfeld, known to all as Gabby, passed away at 11:59pm on August 6, 2014, his 89th birthday. Although never a resident of the Monterey area, he was a frequent and enthusiastic visitor.
He was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. He enlisted in the Army just prior to his 18th birthday, served in the European theater, and was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He was inducted into the French Legion of Honor in 2011. He attended Cornell University on the GI bill, earning a B.A. and a J.D. in 1949 and 1951, respectively. He met Louise at Cornell and together they moved to Chappaqua where they lived thereafter.
Mr. Rosenfeld passed the NY State Bar and had a varied career including funeral director, builder, business manager of the NY Cosmos professional soccer team, and stock broker, rising to be managing partner with Kahn, Peck and Co. Along the way he also started a medical records transcription service and was co-owner of a car dealership and a recording studio. He had a long history of community service, including as the chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the Town of New Castle for 30+ years, as well as serving on boards of the Katonah Museum of Art, Northern Westchester Hospital, Neighbors Link, A-Home, and the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center. He was also very active with the Rotary Club, the New Castle Historical Society, the League of Women Voters and the New Castle Democratic Committee.
Gabby lived a full and eventful life. He never met a dog or a fried clam he didn't like. He had a loving family and many, many friends. He and Louise travelled widely and he was intensely interested in many subjects, including gardening, boating, and military history. He lectured widely on Japanese gardening, the Titanic, and the sinking of the Maine.
Gabby was predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Josephine; his sister, Saundre; and his aunt, Elsie Smallin.
He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Louise, and his children and their spouses: Leslie Rosenfeld and Chuck Wash (Monterey, CA), Alison and Jim Desmarais (Sherman Oaks, CA), and Eric and Sally Rosenfeld (Pound Ridge, NY).
The family wishes to thank all his caregivers, especially Marilou.
