James Gilbert Obituary

James Arthur Gilbert
December 11, 1933 - October 1, 2018
Monterey
James A. Gilbert, local restaurateur and businessman, lost his battle with cancer and passed away at Community Hospital surrounded by his loving family and close friends. Jim was from Oklahoma - a survivor of the “Dust Bowl.” His family migrated to Antioch, CA where they worked in the packing sheds and fields. Jim spent many long hard days working and thus began his strong work ethic. He lost his father at a young age and was raised by his mother and grandparents. Jim was drafted into the Army, and trained as a medic and gained experience working at the hospital at Fort Ord where he met a fellow medic, his oldest friend, Bob Saleen, a friendship that has lasted over 60 years. Together, their career took a different path when they became involved in the beverage industry and soon were owners (with 8 others) at the “Cinnabar” on lower Alvarado St. As time passed, they became sole owners and began to branch out to other establishments. In 1965, Jimbo’s Show Lounge in Seaside and in 1969 The Elegant Rooster in Monterey. In 1970, Jim found success on Cannery Row with ownership of the Fat Admiral which became the Lobster Grotto. In Salinas, the Tee & Turf and East of Eden. Next, in Santa Cruz, Ideal Fish Market and Malio’s. On the Monterey Wharf came Red Snapper, Abalonetti, Crabby Jim’s, Big Fish Grill, The General Store and Oceanfront. Jim’s pride and joy were the Whaling Station on Cannery Row and The Beach House in PG, along with managing partner, Kevin Phillips.
Jim also branched out into the real estate business - both commercial and residential - owning many motels and single family dwellings. To say Jim was a successful self made businessman is an understatement. He will be sorely missed by all. On his road to success, Jim lived a good life. His passion for work and drive to succeed made him one of the best in the business. He always made time for those needing his advice, mentored many and he believed in others by investing in their dreams and lives. He was a longtime member of the Monterey Elks Lodge and Monterey Masonic Lodge.
Jim is survived by his wife Ardelle, brother Clinton (Anne); sister in law, Doris; sons Mark (Melissa), Scott, and Chris; daughters Vikki and Kelley (Tony); grandchildren Alanna, Joe, Todd, and Hunter. The family would like to thank Dr. King and Dr. Bradley as well as the nursing staff that took such wonderful care of Jim. Friends are invited to attend his Celebration of Life, Sat, Oct 27 from 1 - 5 p.m. at Monterey Elks Lodge.

Jim was a friend with my step-father, Eddie Thompson, while stationed at Fort Ord. When my parents threw parties, Bob and Jim always came. When my step-father died in 1965, Jim drove my mom and other family members to Menlo Park for the burial. He remained friends with mom and even gave my brother, Dennis, his first job as a busboy in one of the restaurants next to Wharf No. 2. I have so many good memories of Jim. He attended my mom's funeral in 1982. Anytime that I saw him, he always took time to talk for awhile.

Jim Gilbert was a great inspiration for me as a young employee at East Of Eden restaurant in Salinas CA. 40 years later I still remember many conversations he and I had on the steps of his office on Romie lane. My heart goes out to his entire family. Try to rest in peace MR Gilbert as I know you are probably opening a restaurant in Heaven. God bless you.
