Kathleen Gowell Obituary

Kathleen MacLean Gowell
September 15, 1918 ~ May 5, 2011

Monterey - Kathleen MacLean Gowell, a Monterey resident since 1957, died at her home on May 5 at the age of 92. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Charles Stuart MacLean and Kathleen Bulliet MacLean. Ms. Gowell received the Latin prize from the Louisville Collegiate High School in 1934, graduated from Vassar College in 1939, was a member of Phi Kappa Beta, and attended graduate studies at the University of Chicago, New School of Social Research.
In 1946, Ms. Gowell married Lt. Col. Gerald Elbert Gowell in Louisville. Besides Louisville and Monterey, the Gowells were at one time residents of Vienna and Salzburg, Austria, Taipei, Republic of China, and Denver, Colorado. Lt. Col. Gowell died in 1991.
In 1961, Ms. Gowell assumed management of the James Bay Goose Hunting Camp near Rupert's House (Wasganish), Quebec in Hudson's Bay, where she was assisted by her long-time friend, the late Arthur Smith of Maniwaki, Quebec, and by the late Billy Diamond who later became the Grand Chief of the Cree People in Northern Quebec. Ms. Gowell donated the Camp to the Cree People in 1973.
Ms. Gowell was a founding member of the Monterey Bay Aquarium and a strong supporter of the Monterey Museum of Art (559 Pacific, Monterey, CA 93940), The SPCA for Monterey County (P.O. Box 3058, Monterey, CA 93942) and the Animal Care Society of Louisville (12207 Westport Rd., Louisville, KY 40245). Donations in remembrance of Kathleen Gowell may be made to any of these organizations.
