Charles Carr Obituary

Charles H. Carr, a life-long resident of Montgomery, Alabama, passed away on Monday, July 1, 2013 at the age of 79. Mr. Carr was the son of the late Daniel Pitts Carr and Erline Rogers Carr.

As a young man Mr. Carr was married to Nancy Mangum Carr now of Panama City, Florida and later to Jeannine King Carr who resides in Montgomery. He also leaves behind a loving family of a son Charles "Lands" Carr who resides with his wife Doris in Panama City, a step-daughter Jennifer King of Norcross, Georgia and her children Jason Nielson, Alyson Nielson and her partner Debbie Inman and great-granddaughter Abbigale Nielson Inman, step-son Donald King and his wife Sue of Marietta, Georgia.

Mr. Carr is predeceased by his youngest son Scott Allen Carr whose sudden death in 2005 was the single most difficult event of his life. As was his character, Charles bravely endured the unendurable. He is also predeceased by his brother Phillip Carr.

A proud graduate of Stark Military Academy, he attended Auburn University and later served in the U.S. Army with a duty station in Europe.

"The lake house" he built on his beloved Lake Martin was his favorite retreat and seeing it filled with his family and friends were always his ambition. In his later years there, he surprised the entire family with his loving adoption of a very large and grateful semi-wild male cat he named "Zimba". Zimba is surely as heart-broken as the rest of the family at losing Charles. The aging tough guy, old-cat adoption was mutual, loving and unconditional.

A proud and honorable man of strong convictions and personality, Charles was indeed "one of a kind" and will leave emptiness in Montgomery, around Lake Martin and in the hearts of his friends and family that can never be filled. Always quick with a joke or educational quip, he was unique in his own right. He was ever humble and patient when noted for the fact that he was the young driver for country music icon Hank Williams on New Year's Eve 1952-1953 when Williams passed away in the back seat of the now famous blue Cadillac.

Many who were lucky enough to have known and enjoyed Charles often sum it up quite accurately with "Charles was a class act...". He will be sorely missed.

A memorial service will be held at Leak Memory Chapel, 945 Lincoln Rd. Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday, July 6th, 2013 at 3pm. The family will receive visitors at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Montgomery's Hank Williams Museum 118 Commerce St. Montgomery, Alabama 36104.
