Julia Oliver Obituary

OLIVER, JULIA PARKER (Judy), died on Thursday, July 10, 2014 in her home. A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church on Saturday, July 12, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends in the Parish House from 10-11.

The talented author of four books of fiction, several stage plays, and numerous columns, essays, and reviews, she was a founder of the Alabama Writers Forum, and at various times served on boards of the Montgomery County Historical Society, the Montgomery Center of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America, the Chamber Music Society, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Symphony Orchestra, St. John's Episcopal Church Women, the Antiquarian Society, the Junior League of Montgomery and the Pandora Literary Club. Survivors include a son, John Fairley McDonald III ; daughters Julia Parker McDonald Goyer and Letitia Arrington McDonald; daughter-in-law Patricia Joiner McDonald; sons-in-law James Lawrence Goyer III and William Manning Muller; grandchildren Julia Parker Goyer, Elizabeth Arrington McDonald, Anne Ferrell McDonald, Charlotte Lawrence Goyer, James Lawrence Goyer IV, and Abigail Manning Muller; sister and brother-in-law, Christine Parker Pursell and James Taylor Pursell; niece, Chris Pursell Fleming and her husband, Aaron Fleming; nephews James Taylor Pursell Jr. and David Howard Pursell, and their families. She is also survived by descendants of her late husband: Susan and Thomas Oliver V, and their children. Interment, to be held at a later date, will be adjacent to graves of her parents, Howard Arrington Parker and Ola David Parker, and her brother, Howard Arrington Parker Jr., in the Parker-Pursell Cemetery in Sylacauga, Alabama. Memorials may be made to The Montgomery County Historical Society, or to St.John's Episcopal Church, or to your favorite charity.

In the torpid society of writers in Montgomery, Julia sent us to one another to be energized and then sat down and, again and again, showed us how to write the world a story. There was no greeting like her welcome. No homage like her praise.
