Clarence Wiley Obituary

Major Clarence B. "Buck" Wiley, 91, of Zebulon, Ga., formerly of Columbia, S.C., went home to meet His Savior on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at Spalding Regional Medical Center. He was born on May 23, 1918, in The Rock, Ga., a son of the late James Walter Wiley and Nannie Mae Medley Wiley. Major Wiley proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for 21 years. He was a Pearl Harbor survivor and retired from the Small Business Administration after 29 years. His many accomplishments included being one of the organizers of the PHSA in S.C., where he served as first vice president and S.C. state chairman. He also served in the European Theater, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and Philippine Campaign during World War II. Major Wiley was selected to act as the grand marshall in the Victory Parade in Luxemburg to celebrate the victory in Europe. He was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church in Columbia. Clarence was a man who was loved by everyone he ever met and was a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend and will be greatly missed by all. The family would like to thank the staff at Pike Manor for their excellent care of Mr. Buck over the past 18 months. He is survived by his sons, Richard G. Wiley and his wife, Becky, of Williamson, Ga. and the Rev. Marvin E. Wiley and his wife, Pat, of Hickory; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Gaynell Wallace, JoAnn Spradlin and her husband, Herman, and Gwen Cook and her husband, James. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Elise Powell Wiley; his daughter, Sylvia Davey; as well as numerous brothers and sisters. A graveside service and interment will be held at noon Wednesday at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia, S.C. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday in the Greenlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Carolina Children's Home, 3201 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204 or the charity of your choice.
