McDaniel Robinson Obituary
July 17, 1926 - February 11, 2022
McDaniel "Dan" Robinson, 95, of Cullowhee, passed away Friday morning, Feb. 11, 2022.
He was born July 17, 1926, in McDowell County, to the late Wilkie Fate Lafayette Robinson and Bertha Jarrett Robinson. He joined the U.S. Navy at 17 years of age, and served in World War II as a gunner's mate. He then went on to be head football coach at Morganton High School from 1952 to 56. In 1956, he returned to Western Carolina University as head football coach and held that position until 1968. He served as a Wildlife Commissioner in North Carolina, as a County Manager for Jackson County, and as a campaign manager for Congressman Jamie Clark. He also served as a Senator for North Carolina from 1999 to 2002.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 59 years, Jean Williams Robinson; brothers, John Biss, Champ, and Bruce Cecil; sisters, Virginia Maude Penland, Vergie Mae Miller, Nellie Jane Rowland, Lena Delores Lawrence, and Mary Grace Bradley.
He is survived by two daughters, Stephanie E. Robinson of Durham, Jennifer R. Chapel (Marc); son, McDaniel "Mac" Robinson Jr. (Sheila); grandchildren, Danielle McCool (Seth), Sarah Robinson, Ben Robinson, Will, Jack, Charlie Chapel; and great-grandson, Kade McCool.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, in the Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Services, in Sylva. The family will receive friends starting at 12 p.m., prior to the service.
