Bruce Block Obituary

Bruce Lawrence Block passed away peacefully February 7 at the Fountainview Center for Alzheimer's Disease and is now in the company of his loving wife, Sunny.
He was born on August 4, 1929 in Lorain, Ohio to Henry and Lois Block.
He graduated from Lorain High School in 1947. He married Sonia (Sunny) Mary Chemrov in 1951 and they had 6 wonderful daughters. Bruce worked hard to support his large family while he earned a degree in Data Processing from Lorain County Community College in 1971. After serving in the Army during the Korean War, Bruce worked at the Lorain Steel Mill until a lengthy labor strike. He moved to the Ford Motor Company and became a foreman in charge of production scheduling until his retirement in 1988. He was a long-standing member of the United Methodist Church and was proud to join with other Lorain-area Methodists in the formation of Lorain Lighthouse Methodist Church. He and Sunny enjoyed traveling extensively, especially to participate in Mensa International meetings and events for the National Association of Parliamentarians. Bruce always loved Lawn Bowling at Lakeview Park in Lorain. He finally succumbed to a long but valiant battle with Alzheimer's disease.
He is survived by his 6 daughters: Ruth [Andrew] Yavornitzky, Jill [Arthur] Counts, Beth [Glen] Boone, Terri Prochazka, Gwen [Alex] Cook, and Joy Block, along with 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Lorain Lighthouse Methodist Church on April 21, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Lorain Lighthouse Methodist Church, 3015 Meister Road, Lorain, Oh 44053 or Fountainview-The Fourth Street Foundation, 2631 North Druid Hills Road, Atlanta, GA 30329.

Bruce, rest in peace. I went to school with you in art classes at LCCC. You were auditing classes there at the time. You gave me a carving on wood. The only piece of original artwork I ever received. A group of us students were drawn to your high energy and quick wit. You were a member of mensa and we all were taken by your notable enthusiasm for life and listened to your wise words of advice. Bruce Block, thanks for touching the lives of your tri-C classmates and involving yourself with our social betterment. Thanks for the quaint lunch get-togethers at your home for us fellow art students, namely myself and Bev Speilberger (I can't recall the other's names). Those days are humble and memorable. You'll be missed, but your wit, humor and compassion will always be alive in our memories. Cherie De Wolf-Graves, formerly of Lorain and Lakewood, Ohio, now residing in Albertville, Alabama.

Deepest Sympathy to the family. Bruce was my supervisor in Vehicle Scheduling at Ford Ohio Assembly Plant for about 3 years, he was a great man and a pleasure to work for. When I retired in 2006, Bruce attended the party my family had for me and his gift was one of his wood carvings.... I have great memories of Bruce.
