John Chovanec Obituary

John "Cho" Chovanec, 53, of Lorain, passed away on Wednesday March 21, 2018 following complications from a long-term illness. Born in Lorain on January 12, 1965, Cho was a lifelong resident of the city. He was a graduate of Admiral King High School and went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps following his graduation.
He was most recently employed by National Auto Wrecking and Salvage. Previously he worked for G Metals, as a driver for Browning-Ferris Industries, as a bartender at Scrubby's Bar, and as a laborer for Paul Shank Home Improvement.
He had been a parishioner of the former Holy Trinity Church in Lorain where he served as an altar boy during his youth.
Cho was a life member of the American Slovak Club; he was an amateur astronomer, an avid NASCAR fan and loyal follower of the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr. Additional interests included travel, fishing, billiards, and playing poker with family. He also enjoyed camping, and especially liked staying at Findlay State Park .
He is survived by sisters, Linda Lewyckyj of Vermilion, and Judith Chovanec of Lorain; along with brother, Joseph ( Nancy ) Chovanec residing in Meridian , Texas . He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews.
Cho was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Virginia (nee Staveski) Chovanec; sister, Mary Lou Shawver; and brothers, Thomas and Charles Chovanec.
A private remembrance service for the immediate family and close friends will be observed with the assistance of the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel.
Contributions in Mr. Chovanec's memory are encouraged to the either Friendship Animal Protective League – 8303 Murray Ridge Rd., Elyria, OH 44035 or the Food Pantry at St. Mary Catholic Church – 309 7th Street, Lorain, OH 44052.
