Kenneth Parks Obituary

Kenneth Alan Parks
ANN ARBOR, Michigan– Kenneth Alan Parks passed away at Arbor Hospice in Ann Arbor Michigan on December 8, 2010 after a brief battle with cancer.
Ken was born in Lorain, Ohio on March 23, 1950 to John and Mary Ruth Parks. He attended Fairhome and Lakeview Elementary Schools, Irving Junior High School and Lorain High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force and served his country honorably during the Vietnam War as a loading master on cargo planes which flew supplies into the country and wounded or killed service men back to the U.S. After being discharged from the Air Force, he moved to Michigan where he lived in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor. While in Ypsilanti, he attended Eastern Michigan University and eventually earned a BA in dance. In Ann Arbor he worked at Lotus Engineering and joined the Michigan National Guard, gaining the rank of Master Sergeant of a communications unit. At the outbreak of the war in Iraq, his unit was called up and he served 18 months overseas, primarily in Baghdad at Camp Victory.
Ken (AKA Kenny, Kendolane, Kensington, Kenny Parkman, and Sarge) enjoyed a wide variety of interests and activities. He began playing tennis in high school and was the Lorain Men's Tennis Champion for several years, playing right up until he entered the hospital. He also played croquet and won so often that his friends told him he should "go pro". He enjoyed canoeing, fishing, hiking, orienteering and (in the last years of his life) trapping. He ranged all over the Ann Arbor area setting traps for muskrat and raccoon and selling the pelts to supplement his income and satisfy his sense of adventure. Even after he was weakened by his disease he insisted on going out every day with a friend or one of his brothers to check his trap lines. Ken was also very active in his church, the Webster United Church of Christ in Dexter. He served on the Board of Trustees and was instrumental in creating their Community Garden with his good friend Connie Bank. This past summer they produced over 600 pounds of produce for the Food Gatherers organization which supplies local food banks. Ken was active with the local chapter of the Vietnam Veterans of America and will have his name added to the roster of deceased Vietnam vets in Ypsilanti on Memorial Day next May. Something of a Renaissance man, Ken also loved Shakespeare and carried his well-worn copy of the plays and sonnets everywhere he went. He also loved Civil War history and spent many hours touring the battlefield sites when visiting his sister and her family in Virginia.
Ken was blessed by a loving family and a large circle of friends who have been a great source of comfort and support through this process. He is survived by his parents, his brothers Richard and Tom, his sister Barb, her husband Bruce and their two daughters Allison and Jamie, his niece Aura, her husband Chris and their infant son Eliot, and last but certainly not least, his faithful dog Shirley. Shirley became the unofficial mascot of the Community Living Center at the VA Hospital as well as Arbor Hospice where staff, patients and visitors spoiled her with treats and attention. Special friends include Jeff and Diane and their children, Rita, Connie, Steve and Judy, Tad and Wanda, Susan, Ed, Richard, Eloise, Don and the other members of his Bible study group. These people have been a great source of love and help to Ken and his family and we are eternally grateful to them.
Ken was visited by many veterans both during his stay at the VA Hospital and at hospice, and their concern was greatly appreciated. The family would also like to thank the staff at the VA Hospital in Ann Arbor, especially in the CLC, and the staff at Arbor Hospice who treated Ken with care and dignity during the last days of his life.
Ken's last wish was to be cremated and his ashes spread in his beloved Huron River.

Dear Ken Parks' family, I was shocked to see that Ken had passed. My family and I will miss his smiling face. He was always in good spirits, he always seemed to have a fur-friend with him, and was always good with the kids. Mine always wanted to play with the dogs, and always had questions for Ken. He was good with them. I am sorry that we won't see his smiling face around town, but he is at peace and I am sure we will see him again someday, with a big smile and dog at his side.

I did not know Ken but was blessed to see that he is a good man that lead a good life here in this world in what he did for others... May God remain with his family as Ken is with God in His Kingdom.

Ruth and John and family,
Kathy and I were just made aware of Ken's passing this morning. We are shocked and saddened. Ken and I, of course had quite a run in our early days in the Ann Arbor area and that always brought our families closer. I will always remember Ken fondly and know that the good Lord has a solid man flanking him in heaven.
Kathy and I send our love and thanks for Ken's significant friendship.

To my beloved Parks Family: It is just so terribly sad to hear of this form my Father this morning.
Ken had a very formative impact on me during my early years, as well as Tom's.
He taught us the very basics of trapping at that time, and along with that, a lifelong appreciation of what I can appreciate as person in my life Outdoors.
I feel blessed every day; that I can walk my path through life meeting a Ken or someone of such substance along my journey.
My Dear Brother, you've broken the twigs for me, and shown me an everlasting guidance to the Great River!
May God Keep you Close!

We at St Luke's, Ypsilanti, will miss Ken as well. He was always so caring and thoughtful. I mailed a poetry book to him, on his request, while he was on active duty.

I met Kenny in the summer of '77 in Ann Arbor; Elvis died, then China had a nuclear atmospheric detonation, and together we saw a world change and evolve, and we became friends, and I met a fellow and kindred free spirit for life. We knew each other's family and friends, and we established a friendship that lasted until his death. We had many adventures and expeditions together. Kenny was one of the kindest persons I ever met and knew. I will miss his wit and humor; his tremenous insight in the present. Most of all I will miss our conversations. I saw him, and his sister and brother the day before he passed. Now Kenny is at peace. He will be sadly missed by me and everyone who knew him. Kenny touched so many people, and the memories he left for everyone who knew him will last eternally!! My deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Kenny I will miss you.

Ken, you will be missed. As one who has had Ken talk in schools with our Vietnam Veterans group, I could count on him to be there when he said he would. Thanks Ken. He was always there at our pig roast to be a major cleanup person. And Jane and I are hoping Shirley is able to move on with her life without Ken being there to take her everywhere he went. Ken you will be missed. We thank our Lord for giving us the time we had with you. I salute you. Jane and John Kinzinger (Commander VFW Post 423).

I am so sorry to hear of Ken's passing. I was his Prof. at EMU in Philosophy and I got to know him somewhat after he graduated. It makes me feel old when your "children" academically pass before you do--and Ken was one of the best. I'll miss him.

Dear Ken's Family,
Known as the 'sarge' Ken was muched loved by his Marco co-worker's. We laughed while reading his postcards from the field and we appreciated his off beat ways.
As Marco is no more we don't always keep in touch but he will be missed greatly.
