Adrian Castañeda Obituary

Adrian "Chicken" Castañeda went to be at peace with his Lord and savior on January 31st, 2009. Born in Sheffield, TX on September 8th, 1929, Chicken, as most knew him, served in the Army during the Korean Conflict, as a code breaker, completing one tour of duty. He worked as a sheep shearer and cabinet maker most of his life, but it was his role as a husband, father, brother, uncle and friend that shaped his life. Married in July 24th, 1959 to Amalia "Molly" Gonzalez, they weathered all of life's storms to raise 6 children.

He served his country, his family and his friends proudly and proficiently. He never met a person he couldn't, or wouldn't, strike up a conversation, or argue, with. A constant figure at local softball games, donut and barber shops, as well as the closest casino, he will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his beloved wife Molly of Midland, TX, four sons: Orlando and his spouse Lisa, of Mission TX, Joel, of San Antonio, TX, Ricardo "Rick" and spouse Priscilla, of Midland, TX & Daniel and spouse Kathy, of Midland, TX, two daughters: Juanita "Janie" Castañeda & Melissa and her spouse Joel Aguirre both of Midland TX, fifteen Grandchildren: Erica Perez, Sergeant O.J. Castañeda UNMC, PFC Cameron Castañeda UNMC, Celina Valles, Amberly Castañeda, Adrian Castañeda, Patrick Castañeda, Jacob Castañeda , Denna Valles, Miranda Aguirre, Bianca Castañeda, Brina Castañeda, Micaela Aguirre, Mirayah Aguirre & Anysa Castañeda four Great Grandchildren: Jacob Castañeda, Alexis Castañeda, Noah Castañeda & Anthony Adrian Villafranco, three brothers: Alejandro and his spouse Tonia , Baldo and his spouse Belia and Freddie, two Sisters: Leonor and her spouse Eliseo Medina and Lucy and her spouse Bill Hargis, numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends, and their respective spouses.

Preceding him in death are: his parents Augustine and Petra, one brother Gabriel, one sister Consuelo Castro and one grandson Brandon David, as well as many friends and brothers in arms.

Services are scheduled for Wednesday February 4, 2009 at 9:00 AM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, with a rosary scheduled for Tuesday February 3, 2009 at 7:00 PM at Lewallen-Garcia-Pipkin Funeral Home & Chapel. Graveside Services are to be held at Fairview Cemetery immediately following the services.

Many years ago (1977), when I was a young lady, I was traveling down Interstate 10 and stopped at a gas station in Sheffield Texas. I accidentally left my purse in the ladies room and did not discover this until I was already in El Paso. At the time, I wasn't sure where I'd left my purse but it had in it every cent I had to my name - which was $100.

I was on my way, moving to California, so my parents had to wire money to me in El Paso. In the meantime, my mother, who lived in Midland, received a phone call from a gentleman who ran a gas station in Sheffield. He had my purse and wanted an address to return it to. He had not wanted to invade my privacy and had someone else look into my purse to get my name and number so that he could let me know he'd found my purse.

I will never forget how thankful both my parents and I were that Mr. Castaneda had taken the time to package up my purse and mail it to my parents - everything 100% intact. And he paid for the postage.

He was one of the most honorable men I'd NEVER met and I never forgot him all my life for his kindness and honesty.

Fast forward more than 30 years. I married a man who was a widower. His daughter was married to Billy Ray Castaneda. Billy is now my son-in-law and the father to two of my granddaughters. I'll never forget the day I was telling Billy about my experience long ago in Sheffield TX and he totally amazed me when he told me that little gentleman was his uncle!!!

As I said before, this man, that none of my family ever had the privilege of meeting in person, was never forgotten by any of us for his honesty and kindness. I am positive that Mr. Castaneda is rejoicing with the angels in heaven right now and is reunited with all his loved ones that have gone on before him.

And as our Heavenly Father has promised to all believers in His Son, you will see your loved one again!! Praise God!!!

Your family will not know who I am, but your husband and father use to eat at Pecan Grove Grocery when my husband I owned it. It was a pleasure to know Chicken by the way that is the only name I knew him by. I know he will be greatly missed by his family and close friends. May God bless your family during this loss.

To the Castaneda Family:

Chicken was a good man. I was sad to hear of his passing. I enjoyed talking with him at the MUGS softball fields. Daniel, Ricky & Joel; It was a blast playing baseball back in the 1980's and having your dad be the coach for summer ball. He will be missed.
