Carl Knudson Obituary

Carl William "Bill" Knudson, 96, died Dec. 20, 2012.

He was born Feb. 23, 1916, at home in East Northvale (now Rockleigh), N.J., to parents Anna and Carl Peter Knudson.

He graduated from Tappan Zee High School in Piermont in 1935. He first worked in his families construction business in lower Manhattan and then at Petersen's Boatyard until enlisting in the Merchant Marine in World War II .

After the war, Bill -- known as Bill or Willie to friends and family -- returned to Petersen's, working there in a multitude of capacities until he retired in his 80s. His many recreational interests included working with stained glass, photography, blacksmithing, carpentry and handiwork of all kinds.

In 1956, he married Nellie Marie James of Tenafly, N.J. Their many joint productions included plays, crafts and gardening.

Survivors include two daughters, Barbara and Carol Knudson.

Burial took place at the Palisades Cemetery on Dec. 24. A celebration of his life will take place at the Palisades Presbyterian Church, 117 Washington Spring Rd., in Palisades, at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 29, with a reception to follow.
