David Mims Obituary

After an eleven year battle with cancer, David Mims passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2011, surrounded by his family. David was born on March 24, 1949, in Midland, Texas, to James and Mary Bell Mims. He was a 1967graduate of Midland High School and a 1971 graduate of Texas A & M, where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets. He was a captain in the United States Air Force Reserve. David reached a master's degree from Auburn University, where he met Becky Scott. David and Becky were married on September 1, 1973, in Birmingham, Alabama. They lived in Houston, Texas, where David was a National Bank Examiner and later worked for Southwest Bancshares, before moving to Midland in 1977. David joined his dad and Edwin L. Stephens, as partner at the independent insurance agency of Mims and Stephens, started in 1922 by David's grandfather, Percy Sims. He loved being a dad to daughters, Allison Mims Greer and Melanie Mims Curtis, and a father-in-law to Henry Greer and Will Curtis. He delighted in being "Paw Paw" to Ashley Brown, Adam Brown, Zack Greer, and Zoee Greer. Besides being survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren, he is survived by loving parents, James and Mary Mims; his sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Matt Manulik; in-laws Jerry Geers, David and Deborah Scott, Allen Scott, Carol and Joe Spagnoletto; and seven nieces and nephews, their spouses and children, as well as a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his sister, Nancy Mims Geers. He loved serving his church, First Baptist Church of Midland, through music, bible study, missions and deacon ministries, as well as many committees. The Emmaus Community was also a large part of his spiritual walk and he especially enjoyed serving them through music. As a business owner, David's goal was to be a man of integrity and honor, to treat clients with respect and as friends, and to treat those who worked for him as family. He considered other Midland agents to be friends and widened that circle to include agents from all over Texas through membership in the Independent Insurance Agents of Texas and the Combined Agents of America. As a native Midlander, David enjoyed serving his community by membership and leadership roles in Midland Downtown Rotary Club, Midland Chamber of Commerce, Midland Development Corporation, and various other boards and agencies. His hobbies included fly fishing in Colorado and attending baseball games in as many Major League ballparks as possible. Possibly David's greatest accomplishment and the greatest gift he gave to the family and friends was the example of his strength which came from his unyielding faith in Jesus Christ, and in the fact that God is in control, even in the face of adversity and personal pain. The greatest gift that he received from family, friends, and the medical community was their unwavering care and support through this 11 year battle. Visitation will be held Friday, September 16th, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., at Ellis Funeral Home. After a private graveside service for the family, a celebration of David's life will be held at First Baptist Church of Midland, in the fellowship hall, Saturday, September 17th, 2011, at 1:00 p.m., with a reception following. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the First Baptist Church Bible Study Class of high school boys that David taught in 1999-2000. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First Baptist Church Building Fund (2104 W. Louisiana, Midland, Texas 79701), Gifts of Hope (P. O. Box 1323, Midland, Texas 79702) helping provide support and assistance for cancer patients, and Rotary International Foundation c/o the Midland Downtown Rotary Club (P.O. Box 561, Midland, Texas 79702). Condolences can be made at: www.ellisfunerals.com.

I'm so sorry to hear about David's passing. David employed me as an office assistant when I attended college. David, his dad, and office staff were all and made my tenure at the office very exciting. David had a great sense of humor and will definitely be missed...God has truly received an Angel. Rest in Peace, David!

David was such an inspiration as he continued his love for God throughout his lengthy illness. May God send peace and comfort to all of the Mims' family as they go through the difficult days of missing David and know that he is in the presence of Jesus now.

David Mims is a true treasure to have known. His faith and love for people showed every time you saw him. God has opened his arms to one of the bravest and most devout warriors for Him that I have ever had the honor to call my friend. May God comfort your family with the legacy he left you and Midland as a great man.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Mims family. I had my first job in insurance with Mims & Stephens. I have never forgotten the integrity and kindness shown to me by David. His example was a great one to start my insurance career.

With great sadness, I write this farewell to my friend. David and I were in the Corps and roommates for a year. Every kind word written about David is an absolute truth. He was a man's man, a great husband, and Father. More importantly, a Christian. I am honored to be able to call David my buddy.

I worked with David and James in the 80's and have always counted them as friends and mentors. David will be sorely missed. I grieve for James and Mary, and Becky and the girls and want them to know I have been lifting them in prayer. God bless you all.

My association with David was only through the insurance business for many years. He was a man that I respected and was comfortable dealing with. Always felt he was a fine man and honest with his recommendations. Moved from Midland some time ago, but often checked with people to see how he was doing. Sorry to hear he lost the battle with cancer.

David will always be a great man in my eyes. I only knew him from the standpoint of a friend, who got to work with him through the Emmaus Community. Yet it was always clear that his personal integrity, his deep godly character, and genuineness in heart was evident in the minds of all who knew him, including those in business, church, civic activities, and especially family. David exemplified the traits of the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness , gentleness and self
control. He fit every trait. I wondered if the man had 9 lives, the way he would rebound time and again after bouts with his illness. Now I suspect that he had a life for each of the 9 parts of the fruit of the spirit! In addition to those 9 qualities though, David had a great sense of humor, he was a man of humility and generosity, and there was a sense of deep
peace and true joy surrounding him, like an aura about him, even in the dark times of his illness. I daresay that for him the brightest time of his illness was probably the moment that illness left him as his spirit united with Jesus in heaven. To you, his family, I extend my deepest condolences. I cannot imagine the breadth of your loss. But one day, through Jesus, the loss will be all gain when you reunite with him in eternity. "When we all get to heaven, what a day of rejoicing that will be! When we all see Jesus, we'll sing and shout the victory!" Tish Deffenbaugh

I only knew David for a few years but thought he was one of the finest and most decent of human beings. The Good Lord has another great Aggie, in his fold.
