DeEtte Zant Obituary

DeEtte Green Zant
12/26/1939 - 01/21/2025
Roxy DeEtte Green Zant passed away at home on January 21, 2025. She was 85 years old. She was born on December 26, 1939, at Pecos, Texas; her parents were O.J. Green, Jr. and Bonnie McMahan Green. She was educated in Pecos, and attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, where she received a BS degree in Elementary Education in 1962. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, was a student athlete, and was active in student affairs. She was an elementary school teacher in Midland, at Sam Houston Elementary, when she met John W. Zant, a Glasscock County rancher and farmer. They were married in 1968, and they lived the rest of their lives working on the ranch. DeEtte liked to laugh, was a talented amateur painter, a fair hand at 42, and well-known as a crack shot with rifle and pistol. She ran a tight ship at home, and it is doubtful that her husband ever had to carry a plate to the kitchen sink. She and John had no children, and they are survived by nephews John Clint Hurt and wife June Fouche of Midland, and Patrick Hurt and wife Tia Lustig of New York City. DeEtte, a former Junior Leaguer, was devoted to volunteerism, particularly at Hospice of Midland, and would have appreciated any memorials dedicated to that cause.

"With rue my heart is laden
For golden friends I had
For many a rose-lipt maiden
And many a lightfoot lad…"

De Ette and I were friends from elementary school through adult years. When we were freshman in high school, we were required to go through a Sub Deb Club initiation. Part of the initiation included walking through the old Barstow cemetery. Some of the graves were so old that if we accidently stepped on one, it gave way and we sank to our knees.

De Ette was always an athlete who could run fast. Knowing that I was the opposite of athletic and could not run well, she grabbed my hand and said, "Come on, Babs. We can do this!" De Ette pulled and pushed me through and around those sinking graves. I held on to her hand as if my life depended on it.

That initiation happened 70 years ago and I still recall my gratitude to De Ette for not leaving me behind. When she grabbed my hand, she knew I would slow her down. She was my friend and I owe her - even after 70 years. And so I close by saying, "Thank you De Ette. You were a genuine friend. I will remember and love you till the end of my days. Rest in peace. Delete volunteered at Hospice of Midland when I was coordinator of volunteers. She was everything you could wish for in a volunteer. I lost touch when I moved. My condolences to her family. Susie Mauldin

I knew her as Miss Green. She was my first grade teacher and I loved her. She remembered me through the years...even into adulthood. She was the best of the best. I will miss knowing she isn't on this earth but there is peace knowing I will see her in heaven. Rest in peace, Miss Green.
