Donald Rady McCarter of Midland, TX died unexpectedly on 28 August 2024 while in Shelbyville, TN to attend the annual International Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration with his cousin Gene McCarter and wife Helen of Guys, TN.
For him it was the second-favorite event of every year, the first being present for the large extended-family Thanksgiving pot luck hosted by his beloved brother-in-law Ralph Lyles and family in Springville, AL. Third was seeing every game of every season of Roll Tide football, either in person or televised to West Texas by whatever service provider he could find!
He was born on 17 October 1944 in Birmingham, AL to Rady McCarter and Willodene McCarter Weeks, both deceased. He is survived by his daughter, Dana Chole Cheshire, (husband Gene) and their daughter Taylor Chole Cheshire of Hanceville, AL. Don has one surviving sister, Joyce McCarter Green (husband Jack) of Canton, GA, brother-in-law Ralph Lyles, and long-time friend and companion Linda S. Kirk of Midland, TX.
He is predeceased by his wife of 35 years Carol Bozanek McCarter from South Carolina (2009), and two sisters Martha Dean Lyles (husband Ralph) of Springville, AL (2016) and Sandra Ann DeGrado of Trussville, AL (2022).
Don excelled in team sports at Birmingham's West End High School and so continued in baseball after he matriculated to the University of Alabama. In 1967, he graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Commerce and Business Administration. While attending at Tuscaloosa, he joined Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and ROTC, which, after graduating, led him to join the United States Army where he served stateside as an artillery instructor during the Vietnam conflict.
He attended the First Baptist Church in Midland for decades where he dedicatedly served in the Media Department.
Private services are planned to be held in Springville, AL and Midland, TX.
