The session ran out before the bill was passed. He currently served on the House Committees on Law Enforcement, as well as Environmental Regulations. He is the past Chairman of the House Committee on Energy Resources. Before his legislative career, he served on the Ector County School Board. When not in Austin, Representative West spent his free time playing with his grandchildren, attending all of their extra curricular activities, going to church, working around the house, and hunting with friends and his grandsons. Buddy was also a little league baseball coach and boy scout leader. He loved to read, especially American and Texas history.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley West of Odessa, son, Richie West of Odessa, daughters, Lori Bennington and husband, Wade of Odessa, Ami Satterwhite and husband Scott of Odessa, brother, Joe Carter West and wife, Carolyn of Dallas, sister, Yvonne Miller and husband, Herb of Midland, grandchildren, Kelsee, Shelby West, Scotty, Lexi, Landon, Laci Satterwhite, Baylee Bennington, great grandchild, Rylee West, and several nieces and nephews. Dear Mrs. West,
Bob and I heard that there was a mention of our son during your husband's funeral. Your husband was always so kind to remember others during his time in office. He honored my parent's 50th Wedding Ann. and when my father past away, he sent a flag to honor him. Now - you have honored our son during your time of mourning. God Bless you and your family as we remember, it is only a season and we will join them again. What a great reunion day that will be!
Again - God Bless You and Yours

We have been deeply saddened to learn of Buddie's death. You and Buddie have been such good friends to our family and Buddie has done so much to make life better for all of us. Shirley, we just heard today that Buddy is beholding the face of Jesus. How awesome that must be for him! However, we know that you will miss him beyond measure. Some of our fondest memories of living in Austin is being with the two of you for dinner at Houstons. We missed those special times after our move to Dallas. Please know that our prayers and love go out to you and your family. We loved Buddy so much. He was so giving and joyful. How could anyone not be drawn toward him?

Shirley,

I was honored to get to know Buddy during the years I worked for Jim Pitts. When I think of Buddy, I always think of his humor, his smile, and the fact that his word meant something. I highly respected Buddy.

It goes without saying how much Buddy and you meant to Jim during Evelyn's passing.

I know you are a woman of faith and are surrounded by a loving family, but I also trust you know there are many others who are standing behind you in thought and prayer. May God's presence especially be with you during the coming days and weeks.
