Gretchen Estes Obituary

Gretchen Louise Marvin Estes, 94, of Midland, died on Monday, April 6, 2009, in a local nursing home. Memorial services will be held at 4:30 PM Monday, April 13, 2009 at the First Christian Church with Dr. Robert Bell, pastor, officiating.

She was born on December 19, 1914, in Marion, Indiana and became a registered nurse in Chicago, Illinois. After moving to Midland with her mother, she worked as a nurse with the Humble Company. She met Robert Ainslee Estes there and they were married on December 30, 1939 in Midland. He preceded her in death on November 12, 2003.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Maxine Ferris.

In her later years, she became a cancer clinic nurse at Midland Memorial Hospital. Gretchen was active with Recordings for the Blind, Casa De Amigos, as well as several groups in the First Christian Church.

Survivors her include two daughters, Nancy Caroline Estes of Midland, and Ainslee Estes Bustos and husband Peter of Dallas; one granddaughter, LuBeth Anderson and husband Craig; and two great granddaughters, Kira and Faye Anderson, all of San Antonio.

The family suggests memorials be made to a charity of choice, in honor of Gretchen Estes.

Arrangements are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home & Crematory of Midland. Online condolences can be made at www.npwelch.com.
