Joe Atyia Obituary

Joe Hammett Atyia, 51, of Odessa, Tx., passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2007 after a long illness.

Joe was born in San Antonio on September 30, 1955. After moving around the West Texas oilfields with his family as a small child, Joe lived most of his life in Midland. He attended Midland High School and was a member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. He served proudly in the Texas National Guard for 18 years. Before his illness he worked in the Road and Bridge Dept. for Midland County for many years. He was a self-taught military historian and, an accomplished artist. His paintings and wood reproductions of oilfield scenes were a source of great pride to him and his family. He was a lover of dogs and rescued many a stray, giving them a good home they otherwise would not have had.

Joe is survived by his father and step-mother, Haney and Sonia Atyia of New Braunfels, Tx; step-father, Travis Pieper of Midland, and a brother Don Atyia of Shawnee, Ok., and many loving cousins, aunts and uncles. He was preceded in death by his mother, Deloris H. "Poppy" Pieper.

Graveside services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Park, under the direction of Thomas Funeral Home. Memorials are requested in Joe's name, to be given to the National Kidney Foundation of South and Central Texas, at www.kidneytx.org.

Dear Don:

Nothing can ease the pain of losing a loved one... want you to know that our prayers and thoughts are with you, and your family.

Long ago I read a card that said "God doesn't let us know the joys of Heaven so that we can endure life here on Earth.".... sorta helped me along at that time by providing some solace.

With many hugs and lots of Love,

Kent, Margaret, Andy, and Danny
