Philip Sheridan Obituary

Sheridan Philip John Sheridan, 89, passed away on March 18, 2017. He was born on October 28, 1927 in San Antonio to Dennis Patrick and Mary Felicitas Sheridan, early residents of Alamo Heights. Philip was reared with his eight siblings and his work ethic was formed early in life when he began his paper route on bicycle while at Alamo Heights High School and expanded his route in college from the back of his car. He found time to become an Eagle Scout in Troop 31, which still meets at St. Peter's Catholic Church. In college, he played basketball with the St. Mary's Rattlers and in 1949 earned a degree in history from St. Mary's University. After graduation, his passion for Latin American history motivated him to take a 77 day trip via jeep to Buenos Aires, Argentina where he secured a teaching post in the American High School. With the outbreak of the Korean War, Philip returned to the United States and enlisted in the Marine Corps, and was honorably discharged as a commissioned Lieutenant. After separation from the Marine Corps, Philip traveled to Michigan where his former school principal in Buenos Aires offered him a teaching job in Ann Arbor. He supplemented his teaching salary by transporting racing horses and while on a TWA flight after such a transport, he met his future wife, Rosemary Barron. Her roommates persuaded her to go out with the tall blue-eyed Texan simply to get him to quit calling. She hung up her TWA wings and they married in 1954, initially settling in Ann Arbor where he continued to teach school while obtaining a Master's degree in School Administration from the University of Michigan. Determined to leave the Michigan winters behind him, Philip and Rosemary with their first born infant headed south to his native San Antonio. He then began teaching with the North East School District and became a member of the St. Mary's University Night School Faculty teaching Latin American History. It was at this time that his analysis of the French Intervention in Mexico, entitled, The Committee of Mexican Bondholders and European Intervention, 1861, was published. Shortly afterward, the Naylor Company published "Francisco de Miranda: Forerunner of Latin American Independence," which he completed as part of his doctoral studies in Latin American History under the guidance of Dr. Carlos Castaneda at the University of Texas. Meanwhile, Philip was offered his first school principal position with the Northeast School District and was also commissioned by the Knights of Columbus Historical Commission to do the annotated Index and Bibliography of Carlos Castaneda's entire seven volume definitive history of the Catholic Church in Texas: "Our Catholic Heritage in Texas, 1519 -1950." Even as a school principal, Philip always had summer jobs, and his first contract was providing food service at the Alamo Heights Swimming Pool. He then procured the contract to provide food services at the City of San Antonio Swimming Pools, and in Brackenridge Park, but HemisFair '68 changed everything and he resigned his school principal position. He was awarded the exclusive ice contract for the entire fair and held the food and beer contract for the HemisFair Arena between 1967 and 1974. That food and beer contract became a key component in bringing a professional basketball franchise to San Antonio and so Philip Sheridan sold his contract to the franchise that we now know as the SPURS. During HemisFair '68, he became friends with many of the carnival contractors who operated rides and food concessions at the fair. The same wanderlust that had lured him to South America earlier in his life prompted him to invest in mobile food trailers that travelled to various fairs throughout the United States and Canada until 2007. During this time, his operation had expanded to include rides and the exclusive carnival contract for the Fiesta Commission for 25 years and the San Antonio Livestock Exposition for 19 years. In addition to the operation of the Brackenridge Park Snack Bar, in 1988 he also acquired the contracts to operate the Brackenridge Park train and skyride for 12 years. Scholastic endeavors remained a part of his life and in 1988, Philip completed another Master's degree - this time in Theology at St. Mary's University. He continued to write and published two additional books: A Layman's Prayer Book in 1999, and St. Margaret Mary, Discipline of the Sacred Heart, 2002, and in 2014, he edited and published an abridgement of the 17th century publication, The Mystical City of God, Life of the Virgin Mother of God. Throughout the trials and tribulations of his life, the Catholic Church and his veneration of the Blessed Mother gave him solace and strength. Philip J. Sheridan was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council # 786 and was honored by Pope Paul VI to become a Knight of St. Gregory. He and his wife and family were charter members of St. Pius X Parish. In the last few years of his life, as the world around him was rapidly changing, he sought out the simplicity of pre Vatican II practices of the Society of St. Pius X at St. Joseph's Church, and appreciated the Latin Mass that reminded him of his youth. Philip was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Dennis, Edward, and Tom; and four of his sisters, Helen Barron, Mary Graviss, Betty Kosub, and Anne Riordan. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rosemary Barron Sheridan; his five children, Brigid and husband Jon Krick, Eileen and husband Dr. Joseph Shayeb, Molly Sheridan, Philip Jude Sheridan, and Patrick Sheridan. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Gabrielle and Miriam Shayeb, Christopher "CAS" Sheridan, Alexandra and Olivia Krick, and Aranza and Philip Juan Sheridan Galeano. Philip is also survived by one sister, Pat Woollett, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their gratitude for the excellent and compassionate care provided to Philip Sheridan during the last three months by University Hospital Reeves Rehabilitation Center, Health South Rehabilitation Hospital Midland, and Midland Memorial Hospital. Rosary was held on Friday, March 24, 2017 followed by Mass at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3907 Harry Wurzbach, San Antonio. Private interment will be held at a later time at Holy Cross Cemetery. I apologize as I did not know of his passing. He crosses my mind even though I no longer live in my beloved home state of Texas.
When I read all of the wonderful memories of his years in the concessions business, I could only think of him as "My Principal." He was like an good umpire or referee...you don't know that they are there because they let the game be played as it should with little interference. Thank you, for even as a young student, I remember "Mr. Sheridan" with such fond memoires. Thank you to his family for sharing this light with so many..."Well done my good and faithful servant."

I spent the summer of 1973 traveling the country with Alamo Concessions. Got to see a lot of the country, and am only now learning about the greatness of the man who ran the outfit. I recall his bright daughter, Molly, traveling with us. Now it's apparent that taking her along was his gift to her -- a chance to learn about our country the way his 77 day trip to Latin America allowed him to learn about the world. Phil was always an educator, and I learned a lot working for him.
R.I.P. to a big man who made a large impact. Like many others, I'm a better person for having spent time with him.

My sincere condolences for the parting of such a great man that brought meaning to this world. I was living in the Woodland, Texas and working as a hygienist. I cannot remember if Mr. Sheridan came in as a patient or ? However, he gave me copy of his book, "A Layman's Prayer BooK". It enriched my soul.
With moves I put it aside. Last year, I found it again and have began my daily prayers with his book.
I am sure he prays with his family members as I feel he prays with me and those who read his works and prayers.
Although it was only this one encounter, and I did not know him well, I am thankful to God for what this man that shared.

This morning I learned through an acquaintance of Mr. Sheridan's passing. I wish to express my condolences to his family, who were a friendly and generous presence during my years at SPX -- particularly his sons who added lots of brightness to those days. I have warm memories of Mr. Sheridan and they are often stirred when at Brack or the AH swimming pool, or when I spot a vintage Airstream. As a youngster it was easy to regard Mr. Sheridan as a giant; it is a testament to his life that many adults also regarded him as such. May he rest in peace.

We were very sorry to see the announcement of Phil's passing. He was a good friend and I thought highly of him and his abilities. I will never forget how he traveled the U.S. and Canada to repay a loan that I had made to him at NBC bank during HemisFair. He worked long and hard and sent payments to NBC from all over the two countries and paid off the loan. That said a tremendous amount about his character and determination.

Rosemary and family, we know that his death leaves a void in your lives and in addition a void in this world- -he was a good guy. Charlotte and I send our sympathy.

My sincere condolences to the Sheridan family.
Phil gave me my first job after I did well selling drinks at the Fiesta parades. His boundless energy set the mark for all of us. I always had fun working for him at the Municipal swimming pool concessions stands and at Brackenridge Park Snack Bar. Mr Sheridan's creative use of vocabulary always brightened any situation. That jovial persona belied what a deep thinker he really was.

I will miss him.

I met Mr. Sheridan in 2008. He was a regular at the FedEx print shop I worked at. He approached me asking for some assistance producing a second edition of his previously published 'A Layman's Prayer Book'. Little did I know I would be working with him for the next 8+ years, what a friend he would become and what an adventure knowing him would be. I am grateful to have known him and he will be greatly missed. My thoughts and well wishes are with his wife, Rosemary, and family.

After 28 years of teaching elementary school I am now retired. When I was 15 or 16 years old and working for Mr. Sheridan little did I know that he had started in education. Even at my young age Mr. Sheridan gave me responsibilities and duties that helped me develope character that would help me succeed for the rest of my life. If I could make snow cones all day on Easter Sunday in Brackenbridge Park, certainly high school wouldn't be that hard. If I could carry an Ice bucket full of ice and with a gallon jar of mustard & a gallon jar of pickles on top of it, then certainly college would be conquered. Mr. Sheridan was what we call "old school" but what he taught me about hard work and facing challenges has helped me throughout my life. God Bless Him & may He Rest In Peace.

Mr. Sheridan will be missed. He was my Godfather, and a loyal friend of my father, Jerome W Ciarrocchi, helping him early in his career in education, while Mr. Sheridan was a principal at NEISD. My father, who also passed away recently last November, frequently mentioned that he appreciated Mr. Sheridan's friendship and support getting started in San Antonio. I remember when he and Rosemary frequently visited our family when we were kids, he would always give me an Eisenhauer silver dollar which was amazing to me at the time. I'm saddened to hear of his passing, but am sure he will be in Heaven.
