Sam Hollis Obituary

Wilburn "Sam" Delain Hollis, 86, of Midland, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born to James Clifton and Mattie Loudell Hollis on June 6, 1927, in the cotton farming community of Clauene, Texas. No one can remember why they called him "Sam", but the name stuck. He graduated from Levelland High School and then joined the Navy in 1944. After the war ended, he attended Texas Tech University; graduating in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Education. He married Billie Jean Abel on June 4, 1948, in Lubbock, Texas. They moved back to Levelland, where Sam enjoyed teaching his high school "kids". They were blessed with two daughters, Lynn Ann, in 1952 and Kelly Sue in 1955. The family moved to Andrews, Texas in 1957, where Sam continued teaching at Andrews High School. In 1959, he opened Sam Hollis Studio. He took pictures, sold cameras, record albums and '45's. In 1968, he opened Sam Hollis Photography in Midland, Texas, and commuted until Lynn graduated in 1970, when they moved to Midland permanently. If you lived in Andrews or Midland between 1959 and 2014, chances are that you posed in front of his camera at least once. For some, he documented three generations of their families. He enjoyed photography and grew a successful business. His true passion was "people". He often remarked that the years he spent teaching were the most rewarding, satisfying times of his life. Sam never met a stranger and would talk for hours with anyone willing to converse. He had true compassion for people of every race or ethnicity and believed that women were "just as good" as men. Sam had a great sense of humor and loved sharing jokes. He was generous to a fault. Sam is preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Wayne. He is survived by his brother, Ronnie; wife, Billie; daughters, Lynn and Kelly; and grandson Will. Honorary Pallbearers are Ronnie Hollis, Sid Norton, Don Dickson, Jon Thompson, Joe Abel, Christy Lacy, Kathy Renick-Bell, Roddy Hamilton, and Dock Sewell. A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2014, from 2:00 p.mm to 5:00 p.m. at Ellis Funeral Home in Midland, Texas. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, June 9, 2014, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church with a private burial at Resthaven Memorial Park in Midland, Texas. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Midland. Services are entrusted with Ellis Funeral Home. Online condolences may be offered at www.ellisfunerals.com.

Dear Billie and family- we were out of town for two weeks at the time of Sam's death and have just recently learned of it. We have very fond memories of all the years that Sam took pictures of our family- from the time our children were babies- through high school with Holt on his horse at the ranch and Katherine standing at her great grandparents home(Hospice of Midland)- on to wedding portraits of Katherine & Laura. He always had a big smile and made everyone feel so comfortable - he was a fine man and was truly interested in everyone he met. He will be missed !

Sam took all the pictures of our family and extended family, starting 40 years ago when the boys began to play football in the Midland Schools. He was on a first name basis with all of us and took an interest in all our activities. We will miss his personal touch. Our prayers surround you. God give you peace. The "Boots" Goode Family

Our heartfelt sympathy goes to the Hollis family. Sam was a genuinely kind man. He took pictures of our Seniors at Midland Christian School many years. He will be truly missed, not only for his photography skills, but also his gentle, sweet spirit. May The Lord bless his family with comfort and strength.

Dearest Billie, Lynn, Kelly and family,

I remember Sam and your whole family so fondly. You were such an important part of Andrews in those years we were growing up. Sam chronicled the history of our family and so many others in that little community. My memories of photography are so wrapped up in Sam and his studio, where my brother Max gained so much knowledge while he worked there.

My heart's love and blessings go out to you all at this time.

I sat in front of Mr. Hollis' camera in Andrews several times as a young teen to include Senior pictures. He was a friend of my mother and father and I remember him and his smile very well. RIP, Mr. Hollis.

I am so very grateful that Sam Hollis was a part of our lives in Andrews for so many years. He documented our lives in so many ways, and I think of him often when I see those photographs of my childhood and adolescence. I wish you peace and comfort in the knowledge that everyone who knew him enjoyed his presence and was uplifted by his enthusiasm and genuine interest in others. God bless you and comfort you with His grace and infinite understanding of your loss.

I have many memories of Sam taking photos of us at Trinity School. "Smile for your sweetie" was the line he always used to get us to smile. That or he'd bop us on the head with a squeaky hammer toy.

Prayers for Sam's family! Our daughter was photographed by Sam many times as a midland high cheerleader and graduate. We also had a family picture made in our home...he would always call Lindsey "oh that girl with the hair" and say "too bad she grew up to be so ugly" lol! We loved seeing him every time!! Condolences to all of his family!

I really loved Sam and it was so much fun getting to work for him and Billie after I graduated from Texas Tech. My whole family has known Sam since before I was born and he was such a dear friend to the whole Griffin Family. He was always making me laugh when we were shooting at different events, and I learned so much from him. He was the best photographer I have ever known and he took the best pictures of our family growing up through the years--modeling, family portraits, Senior pictures, my brother's sports photos, my brother's engagement pictures, and the list go on! I have always loved the Christmas cards Billie and Sam sent me and I think my favorite one is the one jet-skiing or the one on the boat. I always looked forward to them. Sam has blessed everyone he met. I am sorry I can not be there in person, but my thoughts and prayers are with you and your whole family. I love you much, Billie!

Sam was a memorable and outstanding man. He was our wedding photographer Sept. 1970 and throughout the children's growing up years to our granddaughters senior picture last year. He remained our friend. We send our sympathy to your family for your great loss.

I worked for Sam briefly 18 years ago, until we moved out of state. I welcomed the opportunity to learn from such an accomplished photographer. My daughter is about to have her senior pictures taken, and I had recently thought that I wished Sam could take them. My thoughts are with Billie and the family.

Dear Hollis Family: I am one of the thousands of people who have Sam Hollis portraits hanging in my home dating back to the early 70's. Mr. Hollis always remembered me when I would come in and was one of the kindest people I've ever known. He will be missed by so many. Rest in peace, Mr. Hollis.

Mr. Sam Hollis personified the word gentleman. I first new Sam as a student at Andrews High. His kindness and ability to relax young people was amazing. The countless Senior pictures he took all with a smile and encouragement for your future were a true gift. Condolences and prayers for you and your family. Thanks Sam you will be missed by all.
