James Hunter

1938 - 2023

James Alva Hunter, 84, of Mount Airy, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023, at his son's home surrounded by his loving family. Mr. Hunter was born in Surry County on April 2, 1938, to the late Lester and Annie Mae Mills Hunter. He retired from Century Link after many years of employment. Mr. Hunter proudly served our country in the United States Air Force. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Kent Iroler; sons, James "Michael" Hunter, Phillip Matthew Hunter; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Gary Schatz; a sister-in-law, Faye Hunter; a special friend, Elizabeth Lawson; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hunter was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Brown; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Harold Noah; a brother, Carl Mitchell Hunter. A graveside service will be held Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at Oakdale Cemetery with Dr. Jon Cawley Officiating, and military honors conducted by VFW Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends Sunday from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. at Moody Funeral Services in Mount Airy.
