Elizabeth Hastings Obituary

Elizabeth J. (Betty) Hastings died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, at her home in Reno, Nev.

Betty was born Sept. 22, 1919, in Butte, to George and Loretta (O'Gorman) Erickson. It was in Butte where Betty met and married her husband of 39 years, John Michael Hastings. After World War II, Betty and her growing family moved to Reno and eventually settled into their home on Knox Avenue, where Betty lived for more than 50 years.

Betty was a devoted wife, loving mother to all of her children, and caring grandmother to her adoring grandchildren and great-grandchild. Betty, being an only child and always wanting a brother or sister, made sure that her children had plenty of playmates. Betty's family eventually increased to seven children, and her home was never lonely. Betty's home was a hub of activity with family friends and her children's playmates always coming and going. The front door was constantly open and the cold drafts reminded Betty of those bitter winters in Montana. Betty would often comment that her cold hands meant she had a warm heart and all who knew "Saint Betty" would heartily agree. Her children were her passion but bowling came in a close second. Betty loved to bowl and her mantle was filled with trophies from the many bowling leagues in which she participated.

Betty was a devout Catholic, member of the Our Lady of the Snows Parish, Altar Society member, and a Pink Lady at St. Mary's Hospital. Her seven children attended O.L.S. and Bishop Manogue High School, where Betty constantly volunteered her time and energy over those many years.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and daughters, Maribeth Jelks and Barbara Passback.

Betty is survived by her sons, John, George (Denise), and Dennis (Genevieve); daughters, Kathy (Steve) Hay-Chapman and Lori Muir; 10 grandchildren, Michele (Jake) Jacobsen, Andrea and Chris Jelks, Justin, Jason and Dylan Hay-Chapman, Erin Hastings, Emmanuel Bujold, Tiffany and Ryan Muir; and great-grandchild, Georgia Jacobsen.

Mass of Christian Burial, in Betty's honor, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, in Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church. A family burial will be held following the Mass.

The family requests that any donations in Betty's honor be made to St. Mary's Hospice Program, 18653 Wedge Parkway; Reno, NV 89511. Walton Funeral Home, Reno, was entrusted with arrangements.
