Dr. Jack Carter Mitchell, 37, died at his home in Del Rey Beach, Fla., on Aug.16, 2007. He was born in Dillon on May 29, 1970 to Bill Mitchell and the late Wanda (Widger) Miller.
Jack was the third of three children, and the family enjoyed time together working on their sheep ranch. Horses were his passion, and he competed in many equestrian meets. He attended Beaverhead County High School where his interest in animal science was furthered by many hours of work in 4-H and FFA.
He graduated from Montana State University with an undergraduate degree in microbiology. In 1999 he completed his doctoral degree in veterinary medicine at the University of Florida at Gainesville.
Upon graduation, Jack took a position with Veterinary Clinics of America (VCA) pursuing his work in small animal medicine. He would later become the director of a veterinary hospital for VCA in Boca Raton, Florida. Jack was dedicated to his work, spending long hours at the clinic.
Outside of work Jack enjoyed many recreational activities, including fishing, skiing and boating. He remained an avid horseman, and tried to come home to Montana to enjoy these activities whenever his work schedule allowed. Jack was always proud of his Montana heritage and of his family. He was a fifth-generation Montanan, the great-great-grandson of Beaverhead County pioneers William B. and Anna Selway Carter.
He is survived by his father William Carter Mitchell of Dillon, brother Will Mitchell of Bozeman and sister Tina Klotz of Washington state. He has numerous nieces and nephews. His mother Wanda preceded him in death.
Graveside services will be held at Mountain View Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Sept. 8, 2007, officiated by the Rev. Karen Disney. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Barrett Memorial Hospital, the American Lung Association or to the charity of the donor's choice.

My heart is truly broken. I just read about Jack. I had a fond memory of Jack and I was trying to look him up on the internet, to see if we could talk and catch up. I don´t know how he died and I hope someone gets in touch with me that may know.i lived with Jack for a short period where he made his home, our home. He used to talk about Montana and fond memories he had. We used to enjoy going to the beach in Florida and he became friends with my friends. Through tears I write this through tears knowing that Heaven has one more Angel. I hope he knows that I cared for him very much and I miss him. Should someone reading this know more about Jack´s passing, please get in touch with me. [email protected]. Jack, you are missed and loved beyond measure. Your forever friend, Bill

Since I found out of Jack´s passing 1 ½ years ago, I have been struggling with so many emotions...
I remember Jack as a very kind and beautiful soul, quick to be a friend, always had a smile, and would always light up any room he entered. We were friends starting as early as kindergarten, maybe even earlier since our parents were friends as well. Jack may have even been the first friend I ever had, now that I think of it. Jack always had a plan and was always very focused on the task at hand, he could do anything he put his mind to. Jack was just someone you knew was going to be successful, live out his dreams, and have a long and happy life. This is why losing Jack is such a tragedy.
Jack had so many friends that loved and cared for him deeply, I don´t think he ever realized how many people considered him a friend for life. We are all very proud of what he accomplished and always hoped for only the very best for Jack. Jack was truly one of a kind, someone you didn´t have to worry about and someone you just assumed would outlast us all - this is why I am still struggling with his passing and find it so hard to comprehend, again, what an incredible tragedy. The world has lost a wonderful, kind, giving, sweet, loving, smart, caring, beautiful person. We will miss him dearly.
Anyone that ever-met Jack benefited from their experience, heck, the whole world could have benefited from meeting and getting to know Jack. I am a better person due to knowing him and having him as a friend. The world is more of an empty place without him here. Please accept my sincerest apologies for not staying in contact with him and continuing our friendship.
I just have to say that I love Jack like a brother and wish he were still helping with all of God´s creatures, God bless you and your family Jack.
I will never forget you Jack, and until we meet again, thank you for being my friend. I wish I would have stayed in contact with you after graduation from High School, I could have learned so much from you. I can´t help but feel like I failed you Jack, I´m sorry. I wish I could have just one more opportunity to be there for you, I miss you! Jack, I hope you are enjoying your fishing, riding horses, skiing, hiking, and taking care of all the animals in Heaven above.
I feel that Jack would have made a wonderful father to a whole bunch of children and would have made the best life partner. I just hope that within Jack´s life on earth he found someone to love and felt the love of someone so that it filled his heart to overflow as he so rightly deserved. Of all the people I know, he deserved all the best things that life had to offer.

I was a good friend of Jack's at the University of Florida. I was working on my Ph.D. in science when he was in vet school. He was the kindest person I have ever met, just a really nice, genuine guy. I lost contact with him as you do over the years, and was shocked to find out he is no longer on earth with us. He loved his Montana home and hearing his stories, always made me want to visit the state. He drove the big blue monster, as I called it, his truck. I am so sorry for his family, they must be heart broken to this day. He made the world a better place during his brief time amongst us.

To the Family of Dr. Mitchell,
We are heartbroken over the death of your beloved son and brother and our wonderful veterinarian. Dr. Mitchell was our doggies vet from the day he started with VCA. When we had to put to sleep our 18 year old Yorkie (Samantha) He cried with us. When our Daschund Dittie died 3 weeks later he was so sad for us. Dr. Mitchell and VCA sent cards and flowers to us and also made a donation in our babies honor at University of Florida Veterinarian School. He was so happy for us when we adopted another daschund and chihuahua. He remarked to us that he loved all animals and really loved Cats but our chihuahua Franklin stole his heart. He was a very special man and our family will miss him and our babies will miss him.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
