Lawrence Jany Obituary

Lawrence Albert Jany, 94

December 10, 1926 – October 25, 2021

Lawrence Albert Jany passed away in his sleep at his home Monday morning. His final wish was to remain at home until the end and the efforts of his children granted him this request. He is now at peace and with his beloved wife Rose, the love of his life for 61 years of marriage.

Larry was born December 10th, 1926 at home to Helen (Heczko) and Joseph Jany and spent his childhood in Butte. When Larry was 17 years old, he enlisted in the Navy, attending summer school so he could graduate early. In the midst of World War II, he was trained on the U.S.S. Ranger, earning the rank of Seaman First Class before being assigned to the U.S.S. Bennington, which was the first aircraft carrier designed for jets. Larry spent his active duty in Pearl Harbor and the Pacific before being honorably discharged in March, 1946. He was proud to be a veteran and was grateful to attend the WWII Veterans Honor Flight to Washington D.C. in 2014.

After the service, Larry met a pretty bookkeeper named Rose who was working at the COD Laundry. Larry was invited to a Christmas party and needed a date so he asked Rose. Thus began a courtship culminating in marriage on May 21st, 1950. Rose talked Larry into using the G.I. Bill to attend Western Montana College in Dillon, studying education while working at Safeway. After obtaining his Bachelor's degree, Larry started teaching in White Pine, MT before returning to Butte where he taught at East Junior High for forty years, retiring in 1993. During this time, he obtained his Master's degree. Rose would often remind him tongue in cheek, "you have the degrees but I have the common sense".

Rose and Larry were blessed with 7 children, 12 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. Since Larry was a teacher, he was proud his 7 children earned bachelor degrees. Grandpa Larry was also especially delighted that 11 grandchildren have achieved professional degrees, with Maddie (the 12th grandchild) currently at MSU Bozeman.

Larry's greatest joy was being with his family, with his best times being spent together at Twin Lakes and Jany's Lodge in Melrose, or hunting with his sons. Special occasions were always recognized with "Grandpa's prayer" before eating and a personalized card. He was a strong supporter of attending all children and grandchildren's events and activities.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Rose Jany; brother, Aleck Vavas and sister-in-law, Delores Vavas; sister, Freda Kelley and brother-in-law, Roy Kelley; brother-in-law, Jerry Stomsvic; sister-in-law, Josephine Petritz and brother-in-law Archie Petritz; and honorary brother Hollis Coon.

Larry is survived by his son, Joseph Jany; son, David (Jan) Jany; son, Rick Jany; daughter, Mary (Tim) O'Donnell; daughter, Kathy (Phil) Blaskovich; daughter, Laurie (Jim) Derby; and daughter, Carol (Russ) Bloom. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren include Amy (Justin) Moser (Kaleigh, A.J., and Jessie); Josh (Marcie) Jany (Alyssa, Cade, and Cole); Amber (Josh) Pulst; Cody O'Donnell; Teresa Blaskovich (Brooks); John Blaskovich; Christie Blaskovich; Weston Derby; Morgan Derby; Zeb Bloom; Jake Bloom; and Maddie Bloom. He is also survived by his sister, Margaret Stomsvic; cherished friend Barbara Coon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. A receiving line will begin at 12:30 p.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 1 p.m. Friday October 29 at St. Ann's Catholic Church. Interment of ashes will immediately follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family invites you to join them in a celebration of his life at St. Ann's Parish Hall.

Special thanks are extended to the doctors and staff of the Veterans Administration, Visiting Angels Home and Health, and Encompass Hospice.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Rockies.

We were blessed to have known Larry. We always enjoyed talking to him when he would come to Simms to watch his grandchildren in their sports activities. He was always so positive and happy. He will definitely be missed. But he is always with you in your hearts. And I'm sure he is watching over all of you.
