Richard Dundas Obituary

Richard B. "Buck" Dundas died peacefully Wednesday evening, April 23, 2008, with his family by his side.

Buck was born in Miles City on Sept. 13, 1916, to Alfred and Nellie (Jeffers) Dundas. He graduated from Custer County High School in 1934 and served with the Civilian Conservation Corps before joining the Montana Department of Highways. He was married at First Lutheran Church in Wolf Point on Aug. 3, 1940, to Edith Ester Wilson. She was the love of his life. For more than 60 years, they enjoyed camping, traveling and spending time with their families and friends.

Buck worked for the highway department for more than 40 years. During that time, he performed many different positions: axeman, chainman, rodman, instrumentman and project engineer. From May 1942 to December 1943, he was on loan to the War Department's Corps of Engineers, Portland District. In 1953, he was transferred to Butte as division maintenance engineer and finished a 40-year career as district engineer when he retired in 1979.

He served on the Butte Airport Board for six years and parks and recreation board for 18 years. He was a life member of Butte's Benevolent Protective Order of Elks No. 240, and was a Master Mason in Mount Moriah Lodge 24 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.

Buck was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, three sisters and his loving wife, Edith.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Chuck Mattix of Missoula; son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Jan Dundas of Gillette, Wyo. He loved and cherished all the time he had with his three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Mark Mattix, his wife, Sharon and their children, Shea and Siera of Hamilton, Curt Dundas, his wife, Helen and their child, Rhys of Albuquerque, N.M., and Todd Dundas and his children, Kourtni and Jordan.

Cremation has taken place in Butte. Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Wayrynen-Richards Funeral Home.

Dear Dundas Family, it is a sad week on Diamond street. From the moment my family joined the Diamond street gang, your family treated us all with loving respect. Growing up three doors down from Buck & Edith was truly a blessing. Hard to believe we spent 33 years together enjoying the fireworks on the 3rd of July. I will also cherish the memories of watching the elated expressions of my children every time you handed them extra large candy bars on Halloween. Through loving eyes and a warm heart, Buck earned the title of "Grandpa Buck" from all the neighborhood children. Dearest Buck, I drove the old model T a million miles as a youngster, thanks for keeping it in the dirt lot. Thanks for introducing me to golf and thanks for giving me the advice to enjoy golf, but also keep fishing (I still enjoy both). Thanks for not getting mad whenever you caught us playing above your garage, especially when you caught me getting my first kiss. You will always remain one of the greatest men I met. Enjoy your reunion with Edith and I hope we all meet again someday. With much love and a million prayers for the Dundas family, thanks for a lifetime of great memories.
God Bless, Donny Griffith (Barb, Shawn, & Ashley).

Greg, Jan, Dorothy, Chuck and Family - Buck will forever be in our memories as the thoughtful, loving, fun person he was. You were blessed with a fantastic father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather. There is a party going on in heaven this weekend and he is in his rightful place at the head of the table. Take comfort from your memories of this wonderful guy. He had an amazing ability of making everyone he met feel like they were his best friend. He made a difference in his lifetime and we were privileged to know him. Thinking of you. Love - Patsy & Jeff
