Thomas Pomroy Obituary

Thomas Patrick Pomroy Sr.

May 8, 1934 - September 8, 2025

It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Patrick Pomroy Sr. (Tato) on September 08, 2025. A husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.

Born on May 08, 1934, Tom was the eldest son of Dorothy Sullivan and Jack Pomroy. Tom attended Butte Catholic Schools, graduated from Butte High School, and attended college on a football and baseball scholarship at The University of Montana where he received his teaching degree. He also went on to receive his Masters degree in Education. Tom taught English and Spanish for 33 years in the Butte School District.

Tom was a great all around athlete competing on the state level from the 1950's through the 1990's. While at Butte High, he was a force on the field for the Bulldogs who claimed a share of the state championship in 1951. He was the ace pitcher on the 1951 Butte Miners American Legion Baseball team that placed second at the state tournament. Following the season, the Chicago Cubs offered him a tryout. He led the Miners Union team to the 1953 Copper League Championship. In 1954, he compiled an undefeated record on the mound as the Grizzlies won the Skyline Conference Western Division title. Although he pitched at the U of M , he was also a running back for the Grizzlies. Later, he won many city champion doubles titles with his sons Tom and Steve, and multiple city Golden Master titles in handball. He was highly honored to be inducted into the Butte Hall of Fame on June 19th, 2019. It was extra special as his cousin Kathleen Bender was inducted on the same date and also his son Tom previously. Although his athletic abilities were quite epic, he frequently stated his greatest accomplishment was the addition of his three children, Teri, Tom, and Steve.

Tom was a wonderful person who was liked by all. He had a warm, friendly disposition who helped many people with his acts of kindness. He truly loved his children and he was a kind, responsible, and compassionate family man. He built homes and garages, and he was always doing projects such as home dressers, tables, and lamps. He was also a very good plumber. Later, he became quite artistic producing many drawings of Disney characters which he also transferred to cups, coasters, and key chains for gift giving. He was very active his entire life and worked out on his bike until the very end.

When he was young he served as an alter boy and his spirituality was evidenced by how he treated people and lived his life; respectfully. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge and also an avid fisherman, who loved nature. Harrison Lake and Skinner's Meadows were his "Shangri-la."

When his wife Beverly passed, he continued to take care of his mother-in-law until her passing. In his later years, he loved going to the cabin 4 wheeling and sitting on the deck with his sons and smoking a cigar. He loved spending holidays with his daughter Teri.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents Jack and Dorothy, his wife, Beverly, his mother- in- law Jerry (John), his sister Dotty (Jerry), brothers Jack (Elza), Jim, brother in law Joe Dixon, granddaughter McKenzie, and his lifetime friends, Bob Frank, Buzz Brodie, Rock Williams, and Tom Tahija.

Tom is survived by his daughter Teri, son Tom (Cathy), Steve (Debbie), sister Pat, grandchildren Cassie (Chris), Alison (Ryan), Callie (James), Whitney, Ashley, Mikel (Jay), 9 great grandchildren and his precious compadre Tuffy. Until we meet again, Amigo, Rest in Peace.

The family would like to extend our thanks to his good friend Bill Lee, Home Healthcare , Enhabit Hospice, and Trek Healthcare.

Services will be held on Wednesday, September 17th, at Duggan Dolan Mortuary, viewing at 9:00-11:00 AM, Service at 11:00 AM, Mountain View Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to your choice of Butte Central and Butte high athletic departments, Butte Silver B's, or the Butte Animal Shelter.

I had Mr Pomroy as my English teacher back in the school year 1966-67 at Butte High School as a sophomore. I will always remember his class, as it was the most invigorating English class I ever experienced in school. He was so innovative, leaving the normal route of most English classes (sentence diagramming, parts of speech) and taking us into the totally different world of English Syntax instead. He had us study the classics (the Iliad); famous authors, like William Faulkner (The Sound and the Fury); the infamous Faust by Goethe. And he was there every inch of the way with us, guiding us through all the inner meanings of all these great writings. Every day in his class was an adventure. Something you looked forward to each and every day. It really was an amazing learning experience.
Two or three years ago, I wrote to him after failing to connect with him at his home on one of my trips to Butte. He so graciously replied, which was so endearing and welcomed. I don´t know that he could possibly remember my name nor face after those many, many intervening years since I was in his class. Nonetheless, I so appreciated his handwritten note in reply. He had recently gone through a medical procedure that had to make it difficult for him to get around. But he took the time for me.
I replied almost immediately and looked so forward to another of his letters but it never came. Not to worry, as I treasure his note to me so much.

He was an outstanding educator.

I remember meeting Mr Pomroy years ago when I was seeing his daughter Teri,(we were in middle school ?) He was polite, understanding and had a command presence about him I have never forgotten. Simply interacting with him there was no question that he was a genuinely good man with a strong love and dedication for his family and though his presence was powerful, he made me feel at ease and comfortable,,,a good man indeed!

Mr. Pomroy was my Spanish teacher at Butte High School for two years. He made learning a foreign language fun. He made learning fun period. He was one of my favorite teachers. I still remember the days we had to sing songs in Spanish. He inspired me to become a teacher as well. Thank-you Senior Pomroy, RIP. Sending thoughts and prayers to the Pomroy family.

Mr. and Mrs. Pomroy were 2 of the nicest parents I ever was graced to know. Tom Sr. was strong in his commitment, but always with an open smile and disposition in his heart. I never had his Spanish class, but my brother did a liked him so much we always called him senior Pomroy and he appreciated it. RIP Senior Pomroy.
