Albert J. Hollus

AGE: 76 • Woodbridge

Albert J. Hollus of Woodbridge died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family at JFK Medical Center in Edison on Monday, August 20th. He was 76. Born and raised in Perth Amboy, Mr. Hollus served in the United States Navy as a Petty Officer. Upon discharge, he married Valerie Elisko in 1962 and moved to Woodbridge, where they raised their family. Mrs. Elisko-Hollus died in 1998. Mr. Hollus later married Maria Ngying in 2004 and she preceded him in death in 2011.

Mr. Hollus was employed by the Woodbridge Township Police Department as an officer for 31 years and belonged to the PBA Local 38. Upon his retirement he was president of the NJ State Retired Police and Fireman's Association Local 9 Middlesex and Monmouth Counties and was an active member of the VFW Post 7164 of Avenel. Mr. Hollus was involved with many religious organizations. He was an active member of St. James R.C. Church, Woodbridge, where he served as a lector. In addition, he was a member of the St. Nicholas Byzantine Church, Perth Amboy, the Hungarian Reformed Church, Woodbridge and St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church, Port Reading.

Mr. Hollus is predeceased by his wives Valerie and Maria, his parents John and Anna Reway-Hollus, a sister Eleanor Hollus-Petren, a daughter Geralyn Hollus and a niece Leslie Dreeson-Kennedy. He is survived by his daughter Kathleen Hollus-Lis and her companion David Colalillo of Sewaren, son Albert G. Hollus and his companion Robert Sorbanelli, Jr. of Woodbridge, granddaughters Nicole and Jessica Lis of Sewaren, nephew John Petren and his wife Megan and their three children of Audubon, PA, his step sons; Chris Catipay and his wife Rose and their children John, Ina and Marcus of Woodbridge, Noel Catipay of the Phillipines and Albert's dear friend for 50 years, Robert LaPenta.

Funeral services will be Friday, August 24th at 9:30am from the Gerity & Chubenko Funeral Home 411 Amboy Avenue, Woodbridge followed by a 10:00am Mass of Resurrection at St. James Church with interment at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Hopelawn. Visitation will be Thursday 1pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at the funeral home with a parastas at 7:30pm. To send condolences visit www.gerityfh.com

Al was my brothers best pal for years. I met him when I first came out of the Air Force in 1956. He was a really a great guy. He and my brother are now together. So sorry for your loss.

Al Hollus a great guy and a great friend. I will never forget the trips we took to Florida, U.S. Naval Academy, Maine, Albany, Cinncinati and other sites. What great times our little group had. I will miss you buddy.

I knew "Mr. Hollus" since my childhood days when I was in the Cub Scouts with his son Al. Later, I had the pleasure to work with him for a couple of years @ WPD before his retirement. Always cheerful, & a nice person to be around. Rest in peace, Al.
