Alvin Therkelsen Obituary
AGE: 87 • Barnegat
Alvin R. Therkelsen, 87, of Barnegat died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2014 at 1:30 a.m. He was born in Atlantic Highlands, also resided in Laurence Harbor and Holmdel, before moving to Barnegat in 1993. He graduated from Matawan High School in 1944. He served in the Army Air Force and the US Merchant Marine. He retired from the Sheet Metal Workers Union Local 27, New Brunswick. The son of the late Alfred R. Therkelsen and Arlie Quackenbush Therkelsen, Al was one of twelve children. Al was an avid pinochle player, interested in genealogy, enjoyed the NY Times crossword puzzles and shooting a game of pool. Look for him in the starry sky, a sunset, touch him in the warmth of the sun, a cool breeze, a gentle rain. He will be there.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Harold (Katherine), Walter (Gladys), Richard (Joan); and eight sisters, Mildred (Elbert) Mason, Vivian (James) Egidio, Bernice (Elmer) French, Irma (John) Pemberton, Grace (Arthur B.) Capen, Blanche (Chris) Axelsen, Alva (Eugene) Hulse and Shirley (Joseph) Marrazo. He is survived by his devoted wife, Marie Johnson Therkelsen; and three loving sons and daughters-in-law, Peter and Rosemary, Paul and Patti, David and Bev. He is also survived by seven amazing grandchildren, Jes, Ava, Kate, Jeff, Carly, Matt and Liza; his sister-in-law, Gladys Therkelsen; many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews.
Viewing Tue., Oct. 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Barnegat Funeral Home, 841 W. Bay Ave., Barnegat. Funeral Wed., Oct. 15 (65th wedding anniversary)11 a.m. at funeral home. Interment to follow 1:30 p.m. in Bg. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Vet. Mem. Cem., Arneytown. In lieu of flowers and Mass cards, please donate to the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Assoc. I was so sad to hear of Uncle Al's passing he was always so much fun to talk to. He's in a better place now pain free and in a card game I'm sure. He'll be forever in our hearts and missed greatly.
