Bill George Obituary

Bill George

AGE: 64 ? Perth Amboy

Bill George, 64 of Perth Amboy, died Thursday, February 17, 2011 at Raritan Bay Medical Center. He was an Alumni of Monmouth University, Class of 1970. He currently served as the Secretary for the Perth Amboy Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the United States National Guard. Born in Brooklyn's Bushwick section, Bill George has been a practicing journalist since he produced a Colonial newspaper for his middle school U.S. History class. He went on to continue that work by writing for his high school and college newspaper. Bill was employed for almost 18 years at the Home News Tribune, rising from a beginner reporter through Statehouse Correspondent, the highest reportorial position there. He covered candidates in three Presidential elections, and also covered visits to the local area by Millicent Fenwick, Henry Kissinger and William Westmoreland, Charles Wiley among others. A new concept in weekly newspapers was born on Sept. 8, 1993, with the publication of Vol. 1 No. 1 of the Amboy Beacon. Founders Bill George and Phyllis Steigelman brought together some of the best ideas in news papering by combining their journalistic experiences, stretching over decades. The Beacon's slogan was " Bridging The Community" because of its planned role to link the communities of the Amboy Raritan Basin together. Since the Beacon has grown in both readership and influence in the Amboys and surrounding communities which make up the Middlesex County Bayshore. What has kept it going as a free-distribution newspaper in its "Local News Coverage in Depth" it's current slogan, which recognizes it's importance to those who wish to know what 's going on in Perth Amboy and their neighbors. The Beacon is proud to have won awards from local organizations such as the Perth Amboy Merchants Associations (PAMA) and the Hall Avenue Puerto Rican Cultural Festival Committee. From a professional standpoint, the Beacon is proudest of having received the N.J. Society of Professional Journalists' 2001-2008 Stuart & Beverley Awbery Award for Distinguished Public Service for "Shop the Trailers", a campaign against the state Department of Education's plan to force Perth Amboy school officials to house the city's preschool students in pre-fab modular units. which was defeated. and 2008 for the Unmaking of a Mayor and the Middlesex County Chambers of Commerce, Woodbridge Chamber of Commerce

He is preceeded in death by his father, Charles W George Jr.,and his mother, Anne George. He is survived by his Brother & Sister-in-law, Robert & Anne George of SpoutSpring Virginia and his Sister Joann Hrabor of Georgia. Bill was a great friend, he had a wonderful sense of humor, he was a decent, kind man and is greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. His reporting was flawless and direct to the point, he worked very hard to give the public all the true facts good or bad, he was honest in his reporting.

Bill was a great gritty journalist. He was tireless in his pursuit of knowledge and eager to share it with the public. I am saddened by his passing.

Our Deepest sympathy goes out to Carolyn and Bills family. He was a man of great talents, an abundance of knowledge, and took great pride in his community efforts by way of his journalistic abilitys. Bill will be greatly missed especially on Tuesday evenings when he would come to the shop with Carolyn to have his newspaper printed and after all these years we finally got Bill to put his Newspaper on a Stick drive instead of paste-up boards, but we just could not get him to learn the FTP site. They would stay until the paper was done, meanwhile have a few laughs and conversations with us or the staff. Then he would load up his car and be on his way until the next week. Bill you left us to early, We still had so much to learn from you and you still had so much more to tell us. Carolyn we hope you can continue Bill's dream and may his dream go on forever.
Our deepest sympothy,

Dear Carolyn, and Bill's entire family...This news shocked us to our core, since we had, only hours before Bill's passing, shared your good company and a few laughs over pizza. I am so very, very sorry for your loss. Bill's tenacious style, and passionate pursuit of news were to be admired. How fortunate he was to spend his life following his love of journalism, how doubly fortunate, Carolyn, to have had you in his life as his companion, partner and manager. Please accept my prayers and deepest condolences, and may God hold your hearts in His hands and ease the suffering of your loss.
