Ernest Horvath Obituary

Ernest A. Horvath

AGE: 87 • Colonia

Ernest A. Horvath, beloved Father and Grandfather, 87, of Colonia died on Sunday, August 03, 2014 in RWJ University Medical Center in New Brunswick. Ernest was born and raised in Perth Amboy to the late Gabriel and Mary Horvath. He served in World War II in Japan and received the sharp shooter medal as an expert rifleman (although few knew of his honors). He was a natural baseball player heading to Florida for spring training after being recruited, when he decided to follow his heart and marry his wife, Frances instead. He worked for the Chevron Refinery in Perth Amboy for 38 years as a well respected Crane Operator. He then worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for Local 825 Operating Engineers. He was also owner of the family-run Hillcrest Inn in Avenel for many years. He continued to enjoy sports all his life, playing for a company baseball team with a batting average of 500, in addition to playing basketball. He always lived his life believing that it was better to give than to receive, and caring for others. His stories about his life experiences were enjoyed by many (as was his cooking). Ernest was a member of the Clara Barton Social Club and also the Edison Seniors.

He is predeceased by his wife, Frances (Skocypec) Horvath, his brother Stephen and his sister Mary. Ernest is survived by his two daughters, Elaine Zaikov and her husband David; Janet Stone and her husband Glen living in Oregon; his brother William; his beloved granddaughter, Ashley Zaikov; and also many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Thursday, August 7th from 2-4 & 7-9 pm in the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Avenue (Rt. 27) Metuchen. The Funeral Service (private) will be held on Friday, August 8th at 11 am. All services will end at funeral home, cremation is private. To send condolences visit www.costello-runyon.com. I often recall Ernie with a smile. The work done on the Horvath case is used over and over to help workers diagnosed with mesothelioma around the country. In the legal world the name of Ernie Horvath lives on as he does in the hearts of those who knew him.
