George Strauss

Somerset - George Strauss, 96, of Somerset died peacefully at Parker River Road, Piscataway, on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, his wife by his side.

George was born in Vienna, Austria. In 1939 he and his parents were able to emigrate to Australia. He worked as a chemist and graduated from Sydney Technical College with an external degree from the University of London. In 1952 George came to the U.S. for graduate studies in chemistry at Lehigh University. He was pleased to become an American citizen. He began a long academic career at Rutgers University as a professor of physical chemistry at University College, Douglass College, and Rutgers University. He was a teacher dedicated to his students and a determined and avid researcher. He enjoyed spending time with his family and attending performances of classical music, operas, and theater. His love of books was expressed by his long involvement with the Friends of the Piscataway Library, and his great enjoyment of the outdoors by many years of hiking especially with the University Outing Club. George always enjoyed a pun, puzzle, or limerick. He was a member of the Unitarian Society of New Brunswick, a volunteer at Elijah's Promise meal program, a member of the American Chemical Society, Sigma Xi, the Canal Walk Men's Club, University Outing Club,,and of various nature conservation organizations.

Survivors are his loving wife of nearly 64 years Marilyn (Jeffrey), his son Paul and wife Rachel, and daughter Barbara and husband Larry Sanders, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was lately well cared for by staff at Parker River Road and Stein Hospice.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, August 25, 11:00 a.m. at The Unitarian Society, 176 Tices Lane, East Brunswick, N. J. In lieu of flowers, contributions in George's memory to a library of one's choice would be welcome.
